Front Garden

Phormium Tenax. Various colours and heights available. Heucheras, my all time favourites, so many colours/shades appearing now. Could be inerspersed with all sorts of all the year round bulbs . Try a colour scheme, say purple and silver plants whatever you like. So many plants, never enough garden space. Silver Birch in the middle of that grass patch?

I only tidy what is absolutely necessary. At the end of my 100' garden I leave the lavender hedge, meadowsweet, fennel & aster seeds for the birds to enjoy. I have been rewarded watching the Blue Tits & sparrows looking for insects and bugs.  Leaving plants to show winter structure it protects a lot of the perennials and grasses, that are only now in full growth.

Left grey overcast Devon behind and in sunny West Sussex. Horsham was lovely today, but it got very cold in the evening. Always degrees warmer and more sunnier here!

  Weed for one, an herbal remedy for another!   I am very angry with myself, as I should know the name of the first one. Comes out early spring, as it was once used as an early cough remedy. That and carving out a suede I sem to remember doing over 30 years ago when the children were young! The second one is Borage. The leaves are rather prickly and rough, but the bees love it. Borage and Comfrey are very similar. Both excellent for the bees, and for adding to recycling bins. Comfrey you can make liquid compost from, but Monty Don says it stinks!

 Ah! I cheat then. The perennial weeds go in the council compost wheelie bin. Heat...sun  No we don't get them here, unless it is when I am at work in the middle of a warehouse taking calls all day long. I don't see the outside world then. Bang on retirement, only another 5 years!

I had 2 compost bins then a work colleague gave me another bigger one. Oh how I save every veg and fruit scrap, used tissues and a bit of cardboard to make sure I keep these bins well supplied.The weed we clear from the pond is also put in them as well. I have even started buying a box of veg from my local farm store to eat healthily, but also to put any left overs on the heap .I cannot get enough compost and still have to buy bags of it, as well as the horse manure from another work colleague. Yes it has made a big difference. Also I have started planting higher plants, and not just the low, ground cover ones as when I first started. Be bold and go for it!

This time of year I have a number of small fungi on my back lawn,and I love to see them there. I don't touch them, just have a good look and pass on. Nature has a purpose for everything and I just hate the fact mankind seems to want to kill or destroy everything it does not understand. Not having a go at anyone on this site, just a bee I have in my bonnet!

Being so cold and wet in Tiverton, our plants are always struggling to flower before the winter frosts, and only now any annual geraniums I bought for the pots are showing buds. So I stick to hardies and perenials that come back every year. This has been through trial and error, and too many favourite plants being eaten by the ever present slugs  in our draughty garden !

I bubble wrapped around each pot in my plastic green houses last year, rather than the greenhouse itself. They would have survived and  all did very well, until the slugs got them and destroyed the lot! I was heart broken. The large pots I cannot move I actually put hay in the last 2 years. They got very soggy, but seems to have helped the plants and climbers survive. We do ge tvery  cold and very wet here.

Where ever I have moved there has never been anything in the garden. Neither plant, bird nor bee. So I have always had to start from scratch. But as my brother pointed out I have always left a  garden full of food for these insects and birds.7 years later, I have done it again! Also a pond for any other vertebrae that might need to eat and breed. All we could do with in Tiverton is some sunshine and warmth, but as there is a shortage of this I plant what does grow
