Filling plant pots

I also use used t-bags, especially to line hanging baskets and teracotta pots. They retain water, very useful in dry weather. If you spread food granules and water retaining crystals over the T-bags before topping with compost it works even better!

Where can I grow a grapevine?

Marine is right, once they are established they need little pampering. Keep them well watered as well so you get juicy plump fruit. I was surprised to find that they are tough enough to survive heavy frost too!!

I don't think height matters, but they need moisture, warmth and lots of sun. I have them clambering up an old tree trunk, stubby and short in a large pot(approximately 5' tall), one trailed in the GH , along a fence, up a pergola and arch and they are various heights. Easy to strike as well from the prunings in the autumn.

So do have a go, they are easy to grow, but need pruning in the autumn to give you fruit. You can use the young leaves too, blanched and stuffed..delicious

Hi Lulu, they thrive in moist damp areas. I have a few by the fish pond and the reflection of the leaves and dainty dangling white flowers are very pretty.

Apart from the sawfly they need little care and come up every spring without fail.

What do you do with grass clippings?

Posted: 23/04/2014 at 16:05

.I put thin layers of it mixed with shredded cardboard and paper in the compost bins. The rest I use as mulch under fruit trees around shade plants.I also spread it in between the ferns in the 'fern corner' in a shady area. It  helps stops cow parsley, elder and  the nettle patch from taking over the garden. Two of my neighbours help by giving me their grass too and it saves them having to send it to the council.

I am sorry to say I didn't as there is not enough "gardening" info etc. the focus seems to be on competition, cooking etc. I felt as if I have been watching  a reality show with the emphasis on anything but gardening and plants and growing....!!
