crocuses

Posted: 13/03/2014 at 08:46

A friend who lives in Huddersfield tells me the crocuses she planted in the church garden last autumn haven't come up.  She has dug them up and there doesn't appear to be any mice damage.  They aren't in a shady position, and everything else is growing normally, so I wonder what has happened to these crocuses - any ideas?

PROPAGATION FROM SEED

I found a nice fat seedpod on my Yolande tulip which had got missed when I cut them back.  Is there any point in trying to get a flowering bulb from seed?  Any special needs?

earwigs

Not a problem, but I keep seeing advice on earwigs on dahlias and it occurred to me that I can't remember the last time I saw an earwig.  Are they in decline, I wonder?  An endangered species?

Thank you so much, Verdun and addict - and I think Ixia is probably right.  I knew I had seen it before somewhere but couldn't pinpoint it.  I've passed the info on to my friend and she is grateful to you too.

A friend has asked me the folowing: "I am trying to find out what has appeared in my garden.   It is bright orange about 15/18 inches high., now has a second flower about the size and same colour as an orange poppy (like the Welsh yellow one)  On a very slender stem a bit like a freesia stem not really any leaves as such  although there could be one coming up from the base.   It is only one  flower on each stem and opens like a trumpet and closes up again."  She has sent me the following photos - Anyone got any ideas?  It can't be a day lily because there don't seem, to be any leaves.

Gaura Rosyjane -  I divided mine last autumn.  Both looking a bit straggly - would they benefit from being cut back, I wonder?  Not grown gaura before.

Last year I was too busy for Chelsea Chop so it was the Hampton Hack.  Have done sedums for years, and rudbeckia, haven't tried heleniums but in view of other comments will try this year.  I have done aster amellus but it is so late this year I don't think I'll bother.  BTW I believe it was Geoff Hamilton who advocated the 'bent wire' thingy when he did GW.

Tithonia

How is it that Monty Don manages to get tithonias in flower in the Jewel Garden in the summer, while mine don't manage to produce a flower until September when the days are getting shorter, and cooler.  I get a few half-hearted looking flowers which never set seed.  Is it possible to get them to flower earlier without artificial lighting?

Plant labelling

Over the years we've tried most things and the pencil seems to work best.  The problem is how to use the markers.  If you just stick them in the ground "something" pulls them out/runs off with them or, if they stay in place, it looks like a miniature graveyard.  Tying them to sticks looks unsightly.  I suppose the best thing is to bury them as deeply as possible, just leaving the top centimetre sticking out of the ground, and hope they won't be covered up by the next time you need to see them.
