Honeysuckle problem.

Posted: 25/07/2012 at 08:34

My honeysuckles are not performing very well at all this year - in fact there's hardly any flower buds and my friend says that there appears to be a lot of water shoots at the base. I gave it a severe pruning last year as it was very congested and was wondering if maybe it was a bit too severe. I have a Dropmore scarlet which usually flowers early on in the year and a Belgica but can't remember the name of the other one . Could anyone explain what watershoots are , please ? I couldn't understand my friend's version - thanks Jean.

Flying Ants

Posted: 25/07/2012 at 08:07

Not seen many ants this summer at all , flying or otherwise. Find that a bit strange as we usually have a problem every year in the conservatory and find a nest in the front lawn - maybe they are massing and planning for an invasion as we speak!!

However the horse flys have arrived - I got chased around the garden yesterday by one and had to come back inside to escape . Joe or anyone - why oh why do they home in on you ? I couldn't shake the little horror off . One bit me last year and my leg was in a terrible state. I fear them more than slugs !

Cloudy again but like Jo4eyes says very humid and sticky . Had  potter outside yesterday and got chased by huge horsefly - think it was after my cake. Wasn't sharing. Hope it does thunder to clear the air - not a good nights' sleep. Geoff - you should be on the stage !!!!

Clematis offer in Sunday newspaper.

There's an offer in Sunday Express - 3 clematis for £5. 50 p&p. Ernest Markham, Duchess of Edinburgh and The President. I've taken advantage of some of these offers in the past and have to say the plants I've received have always been in tip-top condition so I'm going for it ! So if anyone wants to rush to their local paper shop you'll find the offer on page 35. Hope I'm allowed to put this on the forum !
