Buying ladybirds or larvae?

Posted: 06/03/2014 at 14:32

Just been browsing the Green Gardener catalogue that was posted through my door earlier

Really like the sound of buying ladybird larvae, which apparently feed off aphids and can bio control them in a garden. Ladybirds also do the same and can also be bought live in tubes

My question is, won't the ladybirds just fly off the second I release them and do the larvae really manage to seek out aphids around the garden, irrespective of where they're released?

curious if anyone else has given these a shit.

Very tempted by ladybird hotel as well. OH thinks I'm mad!

After some help with colourful yellow shrubs for my garden...thank you :)

You're most welcome

Lots of evergreens are good, particularly with bulbs underplanted. All year round colour!

Is this a gonna or can anyone help with advise, think its leylandii or conifier

It's almost Spring Paul, so I'd say wait and see what happens. Looks pretty kaput to me, but you never know!

Definitely a yellow-leaved Mexican orange blossom, as others have said. White scented flowers a bonus.

Some euphorbias are yellowish too, as are variegated aucubas.

Dark purples work well next to yellow as well. Pittosphorum Tom Thumb is a good one. Black sambucus if you have space. Or a gorgeous purple smoke bush continues.

Underplant with yellow narcissus, primroses, then sterbergia autumn crocus and winter aconite bulbs (also yellow!)

Could also try some purple palm type plants like cordylines and  phormium, which add structure to a border.

Plant ID please

Thanks fidget - you have quite an array! Can't ask the person who gave it to me, gardening granny, because she was an old lady who passed away.
