Surely if they were outside at the garden centre they will already be hardened off and should be okay to plant out.

Parsnips in plugs

Hello Alan4711 Turnips can be grown in plugs at the time stated on the packet. The reason for starting things off in plugs, root trainers etc. is that you can grow to a reasonable size before putting them in the ground. This stops slugs etc eating your seedlings before they produce good growth. Also they can be started off with protection from any frost. 

Parsnips in plugs

You would be better off using root trainers or the cardboard inner of toilet rolls. Parsnips grow a long tap root fast and you should aim to get your plants in the ground before the root touches the bottom or they could fork. Also if using toilet roll inners you can plant the whole lot and there is no disturbance which parsnips dont like.

spring onions

I grow mine in pots and never have any problems. I start them off in 3" pots and when big enough plant them up into 12" pots spaced out about 1" apart. I get good sized onions this way. You can have them growing all year by spacing out the sowing times.

Garden Leeks

I think musselbrough are good too. I grow them every year and get good crops.

Freezing is a good way. I have done both this way and find it excellent.

Planting Onion Sets

If the soil is good draining they should be o.k.

Roses

I am planning to buy a rambling rose and see they are sold as bare root or container grown. Is there any beneficial benefit in which you buy ? Does one establish its self better or is there really no difference ? Any advice very welcome.
