Help! Have I got Japenese Knotweed growing in my garden?

Yes, pretty though it is and the bees do love it, but get those flowers cut off now or you will really regret it. It has completely taken over parts of the banks of the River Dee in and above Chester. You only have to brush against the plants when they're seeding to set off the explosions, great fun but disastrous

Roses

I have the same rose Wendy, almost no leaves at all now despite regular spraying since first leaves in the spring. It's been in place for several years now on an arch, but I don't think I would put another rose in it's place because  the spores or whatever they are must be in the soil because, although I try to pick up and destroy all the fallen leaves, I'm sure I don't get them all.

I've found that wetting your hands with cold water then rubbing with plenty of salt works quite well, then rinse with cold water again.

Burdock isn't it? Teasel has a bigger more oval head I think.

I've had purple basil in mine for about a month and it's only just got going properly, but provided your sink is well drained and the weather stays warm it should be ok. It looks great even if you don't get a huge crop. Grew my purple basil 'King Crimson' from seed, but I usually just take cuttings from a shop bought one, root them in a jar of water then just pot them up - quick and easy and most of all cheap!

I use mine for herbs, it means I've always got thyme, chives, marjoram and parsely close to hand when I need them in  hurry. Obviously only small amounts, if I need bigger quantities I have a proper herb bed in the allotment. 

In the past I've used it for trailing pinks and a pretty dwarf phlox.
