what do you think is the best make of bird food you have bought?

Dripping is harder than lard - would that work better? You would need to melt it first, then mix in the goodies. If you have any empty coconut feeders you could put the dripping mix in them. I keep meaning to have a go myself but not yet got round to it.

Has anyone got any snow yet?

Snow stopped now - nothing stuck. Sky def has a grey cast, maybe more up there.

Nothing in Atherton (west of Manchester) but the sky is beginning to look that funny shade of grey. I love the snow but don't like it for travelling in!

Feeding blackbirds

Posted: 11/01/2013 at 13:24

I have bird trays hanging in the trees at the front and back of my house. The pigeons can't get into them no matter how much they try! On the other hand, the blackbirds have no trouble getting onto them - although the young blackbirds take some time to work it out. At the moment, the robin is trying to see everything off to protect "his" food.   I always do the bird watch, but the last couple of years not seen much at all on birdwatch weekend.

Queen Elizabeth rose

I had pink roses in my wedding bouquet in 1971. I had seen a picture of "Elizabeth of Glamis" and asked the florist for those or something similar - can't remember if they were fragrant or not.

Is it too late to take pelargonium cuttings?

Thanks Sotongeoff and Verdon. I'm just sitting down with a cuppa after taking 4 cuttings.of white and 4 of pink. I've also dug up 4 VERY small plants and potted them up. All now on spare windowsill. Fingers crossed!

Is it too late to take pelargonium cuttings?

Is it too late to take cuttings from my plants?  I planted seeds for the first time earlier this year and the plants still look healthy. I would particularly like to propagate the white one as it looks good on my semi shaded rockery. I would have to keep them on a spare bedroom windowsill so couldn't dig up and keep the whole plants. In fact, I think I may have a go as it's a lovely sunny afternoon, and I'm sure the frost isn't going to be many days away now.
