Lovely garden - you should be justly proud of it.

which plants would be best?

Hi Chellie.

I have clay soil and have just dodged out between the showers - so pix are not the best but may help.

cematis "Foreever Friends" bought at Chelsea 2010 - I'm still too scared to chop down the stems after flowering. Even though they are semi snapped!

clematis "Niobe" - this year's growth as accidentally chopped it almost to ground level earlier in the year

crocosmia - they do tend to try and take over.

As you can tell, I'm only a novice gardener but I do try.

Thanks Gardening Grandma - I will now have a go at my "Forever Friends" and "Niobe". I will also have a go at my daughter's pale lilac one - such a pretty colour but she doesn't know the name. (it was there when she bought the house)

Deciduous

It means that the plant loses it's leaves in winter. If they keep the leaves they are evergreens.

Ants

Bookertoo, we were there 1975 - 1983 in Kitwe and Kabwe. Struggled to get veg growing but managed to grow mulberry, peach and an avocado seedling. (wonder what it looks like now???)        The ants were a pain though - we had to make sure everything was properly sealed.

bird netting

I bought some butterfly netting from a small garden center in Cheshire - 2m wide and priced at about £1.50 per linear meter. I then threaded some pieces of galvanized wire through the mesh to make something similar to a closh - make the "legs" long enough to push well into the soil. The only problem is, this weather is stopping my Pak Choi from growing.

Ants

I usually get some flying ants at this time of year. As Bookertoo says, it may be something to do with mating - it doesn't last long and then they disappear.

Bookertoo - your comments about ants in Zambia brought back many happy memories. Not about ants but about the nine happy years we lived there.

Scrapbook

I also think this is a good idea. The number of times I've seen useful advice and then can't find it when I need it!!     A scrapbook would save all the hassle of looking for old postings and be a quick reference.

What is this Leaf please

Hi Ragdoll,

This is how I resized my photo to upload it. My photos come up in "Windows Live Photo Gallery".

  • First make a copy of the photo you want to resize
  • Open the copy and click EDIT, ORGANIZE OR SHARE at top
  • Double click on photo you want to resize
  • Click on PROPERTIES in the wide blue bar
  • Click RESIZE and choose SMALL:800
  • Click RESIZE AND SAVE

Then upload the resized photo. I hope this works for you.

No flowers on Clematis.

 Hi Watermelonice,

This is my Niobe after a shower of rain. Hope it helps to identify yours.
