Very true Fairy about feeling feeling detached  Many years ago a local chap was killed in a pub and it was such a shock, no one could believe it, over subsequent years there have been two more murders within 10 miles and because we hear so much about similar events I don't think we are as shocked, more a case of who was it? Did we know them?

I clearly remember Aberfan and England winning 1966 world cup but for some reason didn't know about JFK until I was older. Maybe had I not been at Gran's for Aberfan my parents would have kept me away from shocking news, Gran was very grounded shall we say.

Think attitudes and times have really changed, don't know if for the better or worse in some aspects. I posted on another thread about my Mum losing her Dad when she was eight she naturally went to his funeral, said goodbye, my youngest sis didn't go to a family funeral as a child, too young etc, or any funeral.  The first she went to was Gran's at age 18 she could go out drinking and vote but had no concept of death and funerals.

Crikey I've gone on a bit

DD how about a variety of Cordyline in the centre and then you could still underplant with spring & summer bulbs or whatever. In time it would develop a trunk and look statuesque. Not sure how much of a frost pocket it would be in but mine does ok in S.Yorks.

Blowing a gale where you are yet?

Oh dear Alan, hope you've got the door shut.

I forgot to say I've also added some compost to dalek from annual plant pots that I know don't have vine weevil or nasties in them.

Sure was, I wouldn't have wanted to work down the pit but many who did so missed the friendship and solidarity your life depended on your co-worker.  My maternal grandfather died in a big pit disaster in 1936 when Mum was 8 and gran always spoke about the care and support she got from other miners families, not the mine owners.

Have you ever left your poly tunnel up over winter?
