Hi all, I have acquired three 45 gallon plastic barrels, great for water barrels, to get the taps fitted I had to cut of the lids and they work great, however I noticed along with birds drinking when full (they would not go into the barrel when the water was lower) lots of insects, it seemed they had become a mosquito attraction. My garden isn't big enough to have a pond and I have toyed with these small water barrel gardens, so I thought could I combine the two. I found a 55 inch pot would fit over these water butts perfectly, although a little deep, I drilled holes just over the lip in the pot to allow water to drain out into the butt, so far I have got three different water Iris, Louisiana, (Black Gamecock, Ann Chowning), pseudacorus (yellow flag) x3 Lythrum salicaria Robert (Loosestrife), x3 Myosotis scorpioides (water forget me not) and some water mint in each pot and all looking good at present. These were selected based on the choice at my local garden centre so if any one has any suggestions for a better mix, or some plants that would happily hang down to help cover the barrel or is it worth fixing some small half circle trough to the side for soil based hanging plants. Also is it worth adding a small pump or just some oxygenating plants at present the water is crystal clear even after todays rain, the breeze is moving the plants and the smell of mint is in the air and the forget me not's are flowering. I have deliberately left some brick above the water line to give birds something to stand on and try and attract more. I think my butts look great has any one got any other ideas for a great looking butt.
