Sounds like the start of the Monty Python "Dead Parrot" sketch!

Did the assistant try and suggest the Echinops were pining for the Fjords?

Pleased you got a refund though

Lawn moss.... Help!

Good link for RHS which also says to be careful of over application of lawn sand as it can blacken and kill grass also.

Yellowing lawn

I never thought about potting compost being water holding. Explains why mine is keeping it's squelch!

Good tip.

Everedge steel lawn edging?

Posted: 15/01/2014 at 06:22

I got some galvanised lawn edging from e-bay at a fraction of the price.

Gardman do it but there is a no-name version which retails for around £10 for

5m x 160mm (16' 3" x 6.5") which includes delivery.

I got some last year and plan to make a start with it soon. It says it's rot proof and maintenance free but I was thinking of spraying it with hammerite.

Big Bold Purple Plants (for August 2014)

If your friend wanted to plant seed you could try the Annual Cornflower (Centaurea Cyanus)?

I have seen some purple varieties but most are on the bluey side. Thistle type flower though.

There is a lovely cornflower called "The Bride" which is also an annual but unfortunately it's white!

Repotting a Christmas Tree...

Posted: 08/01/2014 at 08:03

We got ours before Christmas for around £30 for a 3' tree at the local GC.

Our last effort lasted for some time until my wife forgot to water it one summer. I came back from a month offshore and it was desiccated!

I planted a blue spruce in the garden some years ago at our previous house and unfortunately it was consumed with blackfly so fingers crossed we can keep this one going.

Good luck with your search sgl

Repotting a Christmas Tree...

I've just potted on my small blue spruce that we had decorated outside the front door.

Used John Innes No 3 and mixed in some ericaceous compost for good measure, (recommended by my local garden centre.)

I'm hoping we will get many years of joy from this before I have the dilemma of where it has to go into the border permanently!

How about Sea Holly (Eryngium bourgatii)?

Very "thistle like" for Scottish theme, purple flowering in August.

Talkback: How to deter slugs with copper tape

Posted: 08/01/2014 at 01:13

I've used old cable, stripped to bare copper, wrapped around pots and twisted together where it meets. This seems to do the trick.

I don't think it's the width of copper, but just the substance itself which when wet seems to take on a small electrical charge.

I've found this works better with two lots of cable set about 1/4 inch apart so any persistent slugs will span the two and get a better shock!

A bit fiddly sometimes as it seems to slide down the cone shape of the pot but I've stuck mine on with silicone and when using fresh pots turned upside down overnight until it cures.
