Globe artichoke seedlings dead!

Posted: 18/03/2016 at 11:14

Hi there,

I have grown Artichokes from seed here without problem.

I think because I did not know they were fussy.

I put them in seed mix in my greenhouse and left them to it, some were even outside in pots.

They have grown okay in the garden (I am from NZ where they grew large quickly), but they definitely need to be protected from cold over winter.

I put them as seeds into an already large pot. I did not move them into something else till they were probably about 8-10cm.

I hope that helps. Maybe they just need more light.

Talkback: Stag beetles

I am from NZ and have yet to see any. I would LOVE to have them in our garden and have set up all sorts of weedy/log areas in the hope of attracting them.

My boys would be thrilled to see a beetle like that in our garden and I would feel proud that my garden had what they wanted they they would have come there.
Luckily I am not the manicured lawn, everything looking like a show garden - most insects probably dont appreciate that much!

Planting around Apple Tree

Posted: 08/03/2013 at 11:28

Hi there,
I have an apple tree which I have just planted with daffodils, chives and tulips. Chives and daffodils help suppress grass and the chives can help against apple scab disease. The flowers will help draw in pollinators. I have also planted comfrey as these have a long taproot which draws up some great nutrients from the soil. There is also red clover, mints, thyme, yarrow, blackcurrant, honeyberry and a dwarf peach. I am trying out the forest layering system, and have found some great info online, as well as tetimonial of how well it works. The biggest mistake seems to be planting too close. Good luck!
