Thanks Philippa

I'm trying to work out where they have come from! Do they need to have been brought in on another plant or do they just 'arrive'!? (I haven't had a new plants in a while but I know scale can go un-noticed until it gets very bad on indoor plants!)

Are certain plant more susceptible to getting scale?

Also, Iv seen on the internet that Neem can help, have you tried this? I do have an indoor plan that has scale which I was looking to spray with Neem oil but may try methylated spirits as you suggest!

Thanks again!

I have sound the brown lumps on my fan palm and broom Cytisus, someone please confirm if this is scale and how I can get rid of it (Iv heard I might need to dispose of infected plans so worried how far reaching the problem is!)

Thanks in advance

Advice on building a raised bed

Posted: 21/05/2012 at 19:16

Im new to gardening and have recently moved into a rented house with a big (and slightly overgrown) garden. I cant change the garden too much but I would like to grow my own veg so I thought I would put a raised bed at the bottom of the garden but have never done this sort of thing before so Im looking for some advice  The area that Iv earmarked is paved (very uneven) with lots of weeds on it (to the point that we initially didn’t know there was paving underneath) which I’m in the process of clearing!  Can I put a raised bad on top of paving? Can anyone suggest a good quality but cheap way to build a bed and how tall should it be (Im thinking at least 2ft if I build it on top of the paving and Im thinking of growing strawberries, peas, squashes and onions etc…). Also, what sort of soil should I put in it (can I use the multipurpose compost that I use for containers?).   Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Hi , Im new to fruit/veg gardening (though have kept house plants successfully for years) and I keep finding small white insects on my herbs that I am growing indoors.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  I don’t know what they are and Im worried they are going to infect the tomatoes and cucumber that I growing as well as infecting my other non edible houseplants.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  Iv had bugs on houseplants before and used a spray and have bought a bug killer that says its ok to use on edible plants (its absorbed into the plant) but Im a bit worried about spraying my basil and coriander and then eating the herbs.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  I have bought herbs from the supermarket previously and had the same problem so Im not sure where they are coming from but they don’t seem to be eating the leaves so must be sap sucking (having read upon some of the aphids) Can anyone tell me what this bug might be and how to get rid of it and protect against it in future as they seem to take hold quickly.
