What flowers to grow?

Posted: 21/02/2015 at 15:13

Hi guys,

I normally just grow fruit and vegetables but this year I've made room for a few flowers, what should I grow? On 'The Big Allotment Challenge'  (BBC 2) I saw them growing zinnias and larkspur I thought these flowers looked really nice. Are there any other flowers for a novice to grow?

Thanks in advance,

Hiya fellow gardeners,

I've had my garden plot since last year and before it was a vegetable plot it was just grass so I think it needs nutrients added, which ones? It is also extremely clayey which makes it really hard to dig as well as the unpleasant colour of the clay, how can I make it better?

I hope you can help and thanks in advance,

Hi Tomsk,

If you are trying to plant carrots I would start them off in a coldframe or mild greenhouse (not until mid March/ early April). I would plant them in some old guttering because when you transplant into the ground it makes it easier. However when you do this you may need to space them out a little bit more. To stop the dreaded carrot root fly damaging your plants you should cover them with a fine netted structure which should be slightly dug into the ground as the root fly can burrow.

Hi Bekkie,

I plant my sweetcorn plants in a circular shape and because they don't use much soil (they grow upwards), I plant courgettes/ squash/ pumpkins on the soil underneath them. This works really well and protects the plants which favour the soil. This method is known as the 'Three Sisters' Bed', however the third plant is beans (runner/ French) and I grow them separately as I don't think it would work with the beans growing up the sweetcorn plants.

Hi Guys,

I got given these fantastic things for Hallowe'en but I didn't know the variety and I would really like to grow them next year. I got given the small one to grow earlier in the year but they were unaware about the variety, the others I got about a week ago.

Thanks in Advance,
