Please help me design my garden - part 3

Thanks very much for your suggestions.  I had never thought of the 'cheaper' shops for gardening supplies!  Will try to just sort out soil for now and not be too ambitious until I've given it some tlc.

Maybe for about an hour a day (max) but most of it is perma-shade.

There are currently a couple of half dead conifers in the back that will soon be coming down.  I have no idea what replace them with.  There are conifers on the other side of the fence so the area is in permanent shade and very dry soil.  Will anything grow?  Even super hardy shrubs?  Ideally I'd like something green that will grow to around 6 foot.

Here's a picture if it helps:

Any help much appreciated!

We completely cleared the jungle that was there when we moved in but now need to figure out what to plant, and I have no idea where to start!  This post is to ask for help with my shaded bark-covered edge, but I have other posts for the other edges.

This edge had got a layer of weed-net and is covered by bark.  It is shaded almost all day.  Last year I (optomistically) planted a couple of hydrangea which unsurprisingly haven't done well, although they are just about still alive.  I was planning on planting in big pots to sit on the bark, but I don't know what will do well in medium sized pots in the shade.  I guess a couple of hardy shrubs would be best, but would prefer flowering.  Ideally evergreen and low maintenance, max 5ft tall.  I don't want to spend too much money.

Last year I planted a couple of rose bushes (which are still alive!) and some other bush that I don't know what it is. Also some marigolds that did ok.  Now this year I want to think more long term - I would like to plant some flowering perennials and other pretty but easy plants.  It only gets around 2-3 hours of sun a day, and the soil quality isn't great (but I can't tell you whether it's alkaline etc as I have no idea) but I think it has good drainage.  I wish I had planned better as rose bushes probably aren't the best option for a beginner, especially with young children running around.  I don't want to spend too much money.
