My garden compared to a year ago ongoing...

Well done Oakley, looking good.  It is good to have before and after pics so that you can look back and see just how far you have come.  When you live with the garden every day you do not see the transformation.

Love it

question about bees and roses ?

Posted: 27/06/2013 at 09:26

I have many roses in my garden and most of them are the old roses which have lots of tight petals which the bees cannot get to.  My question is, when the rose has finished flowering and all the petals are falling can the bees then get to the pollen or does it also die with the rose.  I normally deadhead my roses immediately but if I thought it would help the bees I will leave them for a while

Any help appreciated

Beautiful garden Verdun, well done.

tulips in pots

I am like you Tuppence, just could not bring myself to throw them away.  I have planted them in the garden just to see if they do come up again.  If they don't come up they will just rot down into the soil anyway.

Will buy new ones this year for the pots.

I too love astrantias and would love to have more.  Do they grow well from seed, I think I read somewhere you have to put them in and out of the fridge etc.

Female blackbird loses her mate - very sad

Unfortunately Muddy Paws it was too far away from where I live.  I do put mealworms out for the birds as well and they do disappear very quickly.  I must admit I love collared doves, and they do have to feed their young as well so I don't mind them feeding.

Very sad Salino to see a dead song thrush, they are such beautiful birds.

Yes you are right Bookertoo, the car is not nature and it saddens me to see so much road kill, the poor wildlife just does not stand a chance.

Shrub given advise please?

Looks like a cornflower to me from your upside down photo

Not a shrub but an annual but it is very pretty and once you have it in your garden you will always have it.  I love it, it is very pretty.

I could not beleive my eyes last night whilst driving along a country lane.  A male blackbird had been killed by a car and was lying in the road.  Female was sitting on side of road looking on.  A huge crow was picking over the dead male when suddenly the female flew at him and began to attack him.  Even when he flew away she was still having a go at him in mid air.

What feisty birds these blackbirds are and so devoted to their mate.

Made me feel very sad.  I know the crow probably had a nest of babies to feed as well - that is just nature.

Love the garden Andy, you have so much scope there to do what you want.  I think a wildlife pond is a great idea Marion and the holly and ivy.
