What's eaten my rose?

Posted: 27/06/2013 at 11:41

Sounds like some kind of caterpillar to me lotto, they can literally strip a plant overnight.  What a shame though.  I have a lot of pigeons and I have never known them to eat roses.

Any bee keepers out there to answer a question

I posted earlier, I grow a lot of the closed type roses which I love but I know they are not good for the bees as they are unable to get to the nectar.

My question is that when the petals fall and the rose has finished can the bees then get to the nectar ?  This may be a completely stupid question but I really don't know and if this was the case I then would delay deadheading to give the  bees a chance.

I must say I do also have a lot of the open roses as well which are always full of bees

What I want to know is when the petals fall from these tight blooms can the bees then get to the pollen.

My garden compared to a year ago ongoing...

Well done Oakley, looking good.  It is good to have before and after pics so that you can look back and see just how far you have come.  When you live with the garden every day you do not see the transformation.

Love it

question about bees and roses ?

I have many roses in my garden and most of them are the old roses which have lots of tight petals which the bees cannot get to.  My question is, when the rose has finished flowering and all the petals are falling can the bees then get to the pollen or does it also die with the rose.  I normally deadhead my roses immediately but if I thought it would help the bees I will leave them for a while

Any help appreciated

I am like you Tuppence, just could not bring myself to throw them away.  I have planted them in the garden just to see if they do come up again.  If they don't come up they will just rot down into the soil anyway.

Will buy new ones this year for the pots.

I too love astrantias and would love to have more.  Do they grow well from seed, I think I read somewhere you have to put them in and out of the fridge etc.

Unfortunately Muddy Paws it was too far away from where I live.  I do put mealworms out for the birds as well and they do disappear very quickly.  I must admit I love collared doves, and they do have to feed their young as well so I don't mind them feeding.

Very sad Salino to see a dead song thrush, they are such beautiful birds.
