Clematis spider

Posted: 24/05/2017 at 15:37

Thank you all again for your replies and to Fairy Girl, I was thinking I might be losing at least a couple of them.  I must have been very lucky as I have not noticed either of these to problems before. I will be very careful in future what I spray.

Many thanks for your replies.  I feel guilty that I have sprayed them now but having not seen them before and knowing that some of the new leaves on the clematis are wrinkled up and do not look too healthy I thought the spiders were the cause.  In future I will leave them well alone but thank you for replying.

While walking round the garden this morning I noticed one of the clematis had yellow spiders clustered around the head of one of the stems.  The spiders are no bigger than a pin head, if that, and I have never seen them before.  I don't know if they are harmful or not but I have sprayed them with bug clear.  Thinking about it perhaps I shouldn't have.  They do not appear to be on any of the other clematis and only on this particular stem.  Please can anyone help?  Would hate to think I had killed them if they are good for plants.

Grey Soil

Many thanks to all of you for your advice.  You are all right I do have clay soil to which I have added compost over the years but not grit. Sorry Dovefromabove I live in East Yorkshire and upto now have had no problem with my soil or growing plants but will now try adding grit as well as compost.  Unfortunately, I dug out the Golden Rod thinking whatever was wrong may spread to other plants.  Many thanks again to you all.

Grey Soil

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help.  I recently dug up an old clematis in the back garden which had been in about 15 years.  When I dug it up the soil underneath was grey.  This also happened when I dug up what I call Golden Rod in the front garden many of the stems had fused together and I wondered if this was caused by the grey type soil although the clematis was ok just not flowering as it always had.  Any help would be appreciated.

Raised bed of bricks

Many thanks for all the replies, it has given me a lot to think about. A rebuild would be nice but means taking all the plants out.  To render it would be quicker and easier I suppose.  It will give me food for thought over the winter and a job for the spring.

Thanks Dovefromabove, I think that is what I'll have to do but I seem to remember reading about something that could be used to cover the bricks. Unfortunately it was a couple of years ago and I can't remember what it was.  I wonder if concrete would do it?

Hi,  My garden has a raised bed made of bricks and unfortunately some of the bricks are becoming worn and pieces keep falling off.  I like this raised bed which I have planted with alpines but do not know what to do about the bricks other than knock it down which I definitely don't want to do .  Has anyone any ideas on how to mend it please?

Organic weedkiller?

Many thanks for all the replies, I've thoroughly enjoyed reading them.  Love the idea of ducks or hens but only having a small garden and as there are urban foxes round here don't think it would work.  I'm thinking along the lines of the weed control flame thrower.

Organic weedkiller?

Unfortunately I don't have a lawn.  I decided to get rid of it while I was working (perhaps not the best of ideas) but can't face replacing the gravel now, but I do try not to use weedkillers if I can get away with it.  Bird seed grass seems to have a rapid germination, faster then the birds can eat it.
