Clematis cuttisngs

Posted: 05/04/2013 at 19:05

Hi, Can anyone give me any tips on rooting clematis cuttings.  I had watched Carol Klein explaining how to take the cuttings and thought I had followed her instructions.  Although I had taken several cuttings and kept them in the cold frame covered with fleece over the winter not one of them had taken.  Can anyone tell me what if anything I have done wrong or am I just unlucky?

What's the weather like in your area?

There are blue skies and fluffy clouds on the east coast but turn your back and the sky is black and it is snowing.  The wind is blowing off the east coast and is COLD.

Many thanks for your help Sotongeoff.  I will do as you suggest and hope for the best.

One of them has only one shoot which is quite long, if I take this as a cutting will it still spout again?  Should I have started them off later?

Have decided to try and do things properly this year so have started two dhalias (Manhattan Island) off in a deep tray, not having a greenhouse they are on the windowsill in the kitchen.  Both are beginning to sprout, but how big do the new shoots have to be before they are put into the pots in the garden?  Does it depend on the weather, does it have to be warm before they go out?  Any help would be apprecialted.  Space on the windowsill is limited as I have seeds growing too.

Where are all the birds ?

I used to have blackbirds but this year can't think that I have seen any, but still have lots of sparrows and starlings that love to feed on the nuts, seed and any bacon fat that I put out.  With all this rain though the foods get wet through and if not careful mould appears, so have to remember to keep a check.

Love the photo, it's the sort of daft thing one of mine would do.

Bare root geraniums

Many thanks to you all for the advice.  Believe I will put them in pots for the winter as we have had a lot of rain and the garden is soggy.   Roll on spring!

I ordered some geraniums and they came today.  They were bought from Morgan and Thompson but when they came they were bare root plants (I thought they would be plug plants) and the paperwork that came with them did not say whether to put them into pots for the winter or put them straight into the ground and if I put them in the ground do I cover them completely.  Any help would be appreciated please.

What's for tea?

Have had a day out in Bridlington, the weather was warm and sunny, hardly any wind.  Stopped on the way home for fish and chips, not really a Sunday lunch but very enjoyable.
