Climbing rose

The smell is glorious and with a bit of luck with my pruning I'm hoping for lots of flowers next year.

Thanks Dovefromabove, the rose is Etoile d'Hollande.  I have just been on the link you provided which is very informative.  Am now going out to see about tying in the branches,

Thank you both.  The branches are not coming from the bottom but are growing from one of the main stems and going straight up and tend not to bend easy. I was going to prune in Autumn as the branches seem to have gone mad and whip round (and break sometimes) in the wind, which we have had a lot of this year.  Maybe, if I shortened them slightly and then pruned in the spring?

I planted a climbing rose last year which has done very well, but there appears to be branches growing that are red in colour and do not turn green.  Do I leave them on and prune them back in the autumn or do I remove them now?  To be honest they stand out like a sore thumb.

Talkback: Daddy longlegs

I' m with you both on Daddies etc., but the worst is moths.  I just get settled in bed with a book and one will come flittering round the light.  I turn the light off quick as trying to catch them is a mammoth task and I hate killing them.  Funny the only thing I don't mind killing are slugs and snails.

why don't people bother to read post before answering them.

Storms

Posted: 26/08/2012 at 13:43

Did anyone else experience a storm last night? Here in East Yorkshire about 7 pm the sky darkened and the heavens opened, rain like stairrods, and thunder and lightening along with a very strong wind.  This morning the garden looked very battered with leaves and flower heads lying around all over, plus plant pots knocked over.  Have spent a couple of hours trying to tidy up.  Have had to throw away most of my annuals in pots as they were decimated.

Buying spring bulbs online

Have bought once or twice from mail order but prefer to buy locally or where I can see the bulbs, then you know the condition they are in.  I also have problems when planting in the garden as to which depth to put them in at.  Maybe this explains why some don't appear.

Mistake

Thanks Jean Riley, I'm glad I'm not the only one making mistakes.  Several people have mentioned how nice "seashell" cosmos are, so must look out for the seed.

Keeping cosmos

Thanks Leggi, I shall certainly try to grow them from seed.  There is a lovely deep maroonie colour which I would love for next year, so will certainly try to save the seed.  I presume you sow the seed in spring for planting out early summer?
