Talkback: How to take rose cuttings

Posted: 09/08/2012 at 19:52

Last autumn I planted two rose twigs not really expecting them to do anything.  I just pushed them into the garden soil.  One I lost and the other started getting new leaves.  With changing the garden round I decided to put the surving twig in a pot and it is surprisingly doing well.  I have just read Paul N's note on the right way to grow rose cuttings and am definitely going to try it.  It sounds more foolproof than the way I did it.  Many thanks

clematis leaves trouble

Hi, I have a similar problem with a clematis named Durandii and have been thinking that it must be mildew.  This clematis is growing in the ground up a trellis on a fence.  I have other clematis but these are in pots and touch wood do not seem to  be effected.  The Durandii  has suffered this problem for about three years and apart from this looks very healthy and flowers well.  Does anyone know what I can do?

Many thanks for all the replies.  I will leave it where it is over the winter and just give it mulch.  Hopefully it will be alright as I love rhubarb crumble and growing your own is supposed to be better than shop bought.

Hi, Thanks for the replies.  My rhubarb is only in a big plant pot (where do you get at 40 gallon drum from?).  Is there any reason why you are not supposed to eat the sticks in the first year?

I didn't realise you could grow rhubab from seed.  I do hope it works out ok.  Maybe you could try some in a pot and some in the garden.

I have grown for the first time this year rhubarb in a pot (my garden is too small for it to be planted in the soil.  It has grown really well (which I can't believe) I would like to know how I keep it through the winter.  Would putting bubblewrap around the pot help and also do I cut off the stalks and when.  I understand they can't be eaten in the first year.  any help would be appreciated.
