Have a look at this great website about Clematis plants  http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk

Clematis fall into different groups which relate to their pruning times - Group 1, Group 2 etc. You can also get evergreen Clematis.

I think they always start off with half hour episodes, then part way through the series they change to one hour episodes.

Lawn sand or dressing

Im also on heavy clay, and there is nowhere to drain excess water to. The clay is so deep that soakaways dont work, they just fill up with water and remain full.

Remove box hedging?

I would either keep them or perhaps do as suggested earlier and dig some of the rows up and rearrange them into one or two larger squares. If you really do decide to get rid of them then dont just throw them away, there will be someone somewhere who would love to have them in their garden.

To compost or not to compost

Make sure that with any compost heap/bin the compost has direct contact with soil.

Theres lots of things you can add to the compost in addition to your peelings, such as the contents of your hoover, egg shells, torn up or shredded junk mail, torn up egg boxes, t-bags and fruit peelings. You can also ask your neighbour for some of their grass cuttings which will get your compost hot in no time.

Honeysuckle or Clematis?

Clematis and Honeysuckle can grow amongst each other nicely. I have two clematis growing amongst my honeysuckle on my garage..

Clematis Montana Var Rubens 'Pink Perfection'

Montana is a lovely Clematis. I have it growing over my garage where I prune it straight after flowering each spring..

But I'm also actively encouraging it to spread further along the garden amongst the border
