Are these wild raspberries?

It's interesting to note that in Elizabethan times raspberries were the wild types and blackberries were cultivated. Other than that I'd say that, yeah they look like raspberries to me.

Potatoes in containers very poor yield

In my experience growing spuds in the ground will give better yields, providing you have the space of course. We grew some in bags at our allotment last year with the same varieties in the ground to see which would do better, the ones in the ground were by far bigger and more plentiful than the bags.

I'd guess at a type of marmande, absolutely delicious tomato too!

Strawberries at Christmas ?

It depends what you want to use them for really, if they're going to be cooked then I'd freeze them now (or before now as mine have finished already, other varieties might be a bit later). If you want fresh strawbs then greenhouse ones are certainly earlier, although not as early as you want them I'm afraid.

What's wrong with my onions

A picture would make it easier, but generally the tops flop over when they're about ready to dig up. I hope that's all it is

Planting this year after potatoes

I've never really had much luck growing either winter onions or brassicas, I'll certainly be putting plenty of garlic in this autumn though.

I love the idea of growing my own tobacco though

Sweet Bell Peppers

My greenhouse is one that zips open at the front, and like yourself I'm leaving it open all the time, however my thermometer regularly reads over 30 degrees on a sunny day. It really has surprised me how hot they can get.

Planting this year after potatoes

Just a quick thread to ask what (if anything) people are planting after having dug their potatoes? We gave over two large spaces to potatoes in the spring and would like to follow on with something rather than leaving the space empty till next year. Any tips on veg to grow for winter would be welcome too

Potatoes decimated!

I'm not entirely sure but the Colorado potato beetle is striped, yellow and black I think. I have no idea if they've made their way to France or not though.

Buying Fruit Trees etc. Online

Posted: 14/07/2014 at 15:13
Check the age/size of the plants carefully. A decent garden centre will sell fruit trees that are pretty much ready to fruit either this year, or if too late then next. The cheap trees you see in some supermarkets can be a couple of years away from a decent crop. That's great if you don't mind waiting and want to save pennies but if you want rewards quickly, it's not so good. An awful lot of my fruit bushes are from the mirror gardening website, they've all been good quality and price but I knew they wouldn't produce much in the first growing year. This year however we've had bumper crops of strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries and blackcurrants.
