plants for indoor swimming pool

Posted: 08/07/2012 at 14:39

I imagine Orchids would like it, providing they are not in full sunlight for the majority of the day. There are many types and they mostly enjoy warm, wet shady places. I have one on a N/E facing windowsil in my bathroom and it loves it there.

Actually Doris I've had a rethink about my advice, wait til early October, rake it over chuck some more seeds down and you should have strong flowers early next summer.

Poppies like disturbed soil, give the ground a good hard raking and see what happens. It might be too late for this year but it's worth a try I guess.

I sowed some poppies as late as October last year in my Mother in Laws garden and they started flowering beautifully and early about a month ago and are still going now.

T & M OFFER FOR MAY

Posted: 05/07/2012 at 20:00

My Lilliputian plants arrived today, I've never seen plugs that small before. Luckily enough I had a spare tray with 9cm pots and space to grow them on for a little while indoors.

Gooseberry loss

Posted: 02/07/2012 at 16:36

Like most things this year I'm inclinded to blame the weather, there are few gooseberries on my bush too. They do however need a lot of water to produce fruit, I guess they haven't liked the cold and windy spell.

Invasion of the slippery slugs

Posted: 01/07/2012 at 23:34

I have just come back in from going outside with a sturdy pair of scissors and a torch and snipping about 30 of the 'orrible little bleeders. I hate doing it, but I also hate looking at plants I've nurtured for months being munched to death.

This evening I worked out where they were coming from and have put slug pellets down (I still say a quick snip is more kind) and will probably try a salt barrier tomorrow when I can see what I'm doing properly.

In the back garden we have a small Marigold patch. I really don't like Marigolds very much but this year my partner insisted on some bargain ones from B&Q that were heavily reduced. Being a kind and generous guy we bought them home, I planted them up in a prime spot (a patch which by late summer will be full of Mrs Bradshaw's )  and the slugs love them. So much so that I barely need to check anywhere else for them. Snip.

More bargain Marigolds have been purchased since. Kudos me.

The problem is we spend our days making almost perfect conditions for slugs and snails and our nights (well mine anyway) fighting them off our beloved, or not so, flowers.

potato problem

It sounds like blight, which often happens when there's been a really wet spell. I'm not sure what the solution is, but someone on here will know what to do.

Feeding tomatoes with powdered milk

I've tried the milk tip on one of my roses today, then used the left over milk water solution to water the tomatoes. How's that for keeping the thread on topic

no apples!

I'm in the south east and our apple tree is fruitless too, I guess the long spell of cold and wet plus a lack of pollinators just after blossoming is to blame.
