I sowed both onions and spring onions early this year and I have had not one show.

Possible to sow more peas and beans

Posted: 10/06/2012 at 19:36

I just don't want to waste any of those little jewels of sweetness, I remember making myself sick as a child eating them straight from the pod.  My first peas from my own garden, it is almost like Christmas, sooo much anticipation.

What's the weather like in your area?

Following a few terrible days of wind, but no rain, today was just gorgeous.  Not too hot, but enough to slightly colour my fair shoulders.

Bind Weed

Posted: 10/06/2012 at 18:06

I have to say thank you all so much for wonderful advice, since the begining of May, Thursday has been my bindweed day!! All new shoots get staked, week old shoots high up the bamboo stake get uncoiled, placed into a small plastic bag and sprayed. The bag gets tied on and I spray inside the bag once more the following week also. I have to say it is having a huge effect.  One bed it appears to be almost eradicated, this bed it totally free from all plants, I know as soon as I start to dig it over and put some plants in there, I will shake up the roots, so I am taking my time.  I have two very full neglected beds that I am also working on, but because there are plants in these beds, the bindweed appears more prolific.  I have my routine down to a tee now.  It requires dedication, and if I miss just one plant I pay the price the following week.  My neigbours think I am crazy with little knotted plastic bags all over the garden.

Possible to sow more peas and beans

My peas and broad beans are just developing, so I hope to be able to start harvesting them pretty soon.  Do I just feel the pods until they appear full to bursting?  Also is it too late to re-sow for another crop for later in the season?

Many thanks

Lesley

tomatoes

I sowed 3 tomato types indoors and just hardening them off in my plastic greenhouse before leaving them outdoors for the summer.  However I have noticed tom plants springing up all over my veg plot.  I guess they have self-seeded from last year.  I am suspecting that the people who owned the house last year had some toms stray over the period of the summer.  I am actually happy to see them because it lets me know that end of May is the correct time to put mine outside. Happily mine are a little bigger than the outdoor germinated, but it will be interesting to compare them by the end of the summer.

it is the basic angustifolia, I repotted them yesterday and they are all enjoying this newly found sun.

Lavender from Seed

As a newbie, I am a classic windowsill gardner, much earlier this year I started some lavender seeds on my windowsill. It took a number of casualties, but I now have 10 healthy young 3-4 cm high seedlings (an inch and a half in old money).  Today I took them out of the house for the first time, to sit in the sun, still within their old fishtank propogator.  To get to this point, took much longer than the 6-8 weeks suggested on the seed packet, I guess I am now at 12 weeks.  What are my next steps with my lavenders?  I appreciate they may not flower this year, but at what point do I think to plant out?  I am in the Netherlands, and we have been without frost for about 4 weeks.

Seeds as wedding favours

Posted: 02/05/2012 at 21:07

I live in the Netherlands, and it is a given that there is always a surprise gift to the bride and groom on top of the gift list.  I have been to weddings where we had to bring a cooking recipe with a bottle of wine to have with the meal, that sort of thing.  On my wedding day my surprise gift was "seeds/bulbs or something from your own garden that means something to you that the bride and groom can put to use in their garden"  I got married in September, so received loads of bulbs,  I received loads of bridal flower bulbs, I had never heard of this plant in the UK, but they are a pretty white flower..

maybe she could give seeds from a flower in her bouquet with simple instructions of when/where to sew...

I must just add that the instructions to my guests was to not present the seeds in their original packet...I have to say had my car been stopped by the police that night, with lots of seeds in suspicious packages, my wedding night would be for another forum...

Have a wonderful day...
