Figs tree and fruit from last year

Posted: 09/03/2014 at 10:30

My fig tree produced a second crop of fruit late last year but of course it did not ripen.  I am wondering; should I remove these still attached fruit or leave it.  I am in NL and as of yet we have not had any frost to speak of.

Many thanks

Please don't think I am against their visits to my garden, the veg plot is in my main garden, which is full of goodies, every day i "spill" some chicken grain outside the run just for the purpose that they will leave the veggies, but the darling starlings are still not happy they like their fresh 5 a day

Last year, I had probs with birds eating my beet tops and salads, so ended up netting which resolved the problem to an extent.  I have just come in from my morning peruse and cannot believe what I saw...the birds are systematically jumping on the netting (as if it's a trampoline) to push it down the bamboo cane so that they can get to the spoils.  No one believes me that it is birds spoiling my salad not snails and slugs.  I think next year I have to build a proper netted frame over each bed.

This year (2012) we have cut down drastically on the amount of coffee we drink which means that I have had much less spent coffee grinds for use in the compost bin etc.  So, for Christmas, my hubby has arranged that I can take spent coffee grinds regularly from our local Starbucks. Every week they will bag up as many kilos as required so that I can add to and boost the compost, best of all it is all foc.  Can I dig coffee grinds also directly into the ground or use it just for the compost?

Slugs and snails

I have a high toad polulation in my garden and not too many slugs, I'm assuming the toads are looking after the slugs.

Possible to sow more peas and beans

I have just sowed another 10 seeds, I did not realise that more flowers will develop as I pluck the pods.  I tried some of the peas this morning straight from the plant, they are just the sweetest things in the world.  I have been living off spinach for the past three weeks, it is so nice to have something else to enjoy.

Onion help.

I sowed both onions and spring onions early this year and I have had not one show.

I just don't want to waste any of those little jewels of sweetness, I remember making myself sick as a child eating them straight from the pod.  My first peas from my own garden, it is almost like Christmas, sooo much anticipation.

What's the weather like in your area?

Following a few terrible days of wind, but no rain, today was just gorgeous.  Not too hot, but enough to slightly colour my fair shoulders.
