Winter mulching

Thanks for the advice and link Dovefromabove. Well Sotongeoff, I've a good selection but I'm mainly concerned about campanula persicifolia, alstroemerias, peony, oriental poppy, scabious and primula vialii.

Winter mulching

Could anyone advise a relative beginner on mulching perennials for winter. Should the crowns of tender plants be covered or just the bases, and if so must the mulch be removed for spring? Thanks for any advice.

Papaver orientalis Patty's Plum

Posted: 28/08/2012 at 13:21
I bought two Papaver orientalis "Patty's Plum" in May. One started to produce new leaf and looked healthy. The other stayed pretty much as I bought it. Neither produced flowers. About two weeks ago the second grew new leaf and the first a flower spike. This has now gone black and drooped without opening into flower. The leaves seem unaffected. They are planted in well drained soil which has been enriched with manure and get a good amount of sun. Am I doing something wrong or is there a disease process going on here? Can anyone give me some suggestions please?

Zantedeschia without flowers

Thank you for the advice. I don't know the variety but it is about 14 inches high and almost a chocolate/ purple colour, quite gorgeous when it flowers. Maybe it's the freakish weather this year and I live in Lancashire where it's not as warm as the south.

I overwintered my Zantedechia rhizomes in a paper bag and planted them out in containers in early May. So far I have a lush growth of leaves but not a sign of any flowers coming up. Am I being impatient? I know they take about 3 months to flower from planting but I thought there would be some sign of flowering by now.

Huge Pieris japonica

Thanks for all the suggestions. Luckily the pot rim is wider than the base so should be able to try all the advice. It'll be a hard job as the pot is heavy on it's own and as I mentioned the tree is now a good 5 foot and very bushy. It must like it cramped in it's pot - the thought strikes me it's rooted through the drainage holes!!! Well will soon find out.

I have a glorious Pieris japonica that is in urgent need of transplanting from it's pot into the garden border. Unfortunately it's jammed tight in and as it's about 5 feet high will be no easy job to remove. My problem is that although I could remove the pot with the aid of a well placed hammer, the pot is rather beautiful - and expensive so I'm loathe to break it. Could anyone give me any suggestions or advice on removing it from it's pot?

Floppy Rose

Thanks for all the advice , seems it's a common problem. Looks as if I'll have to wait for it to grow up.

Thanks for your advice Dovefromabove. I had a look on the D. Austin web site and read the same description, which is a bit misleading as the tag on the rose when I bought it says small shrub approx 3 feet high!! I will email them as you suggest, and I'll just have to wait until it gets bigger maybe.
