ivy

Use a drill to make some deep holes in the exposed base of the trunk and fill these with sodium chloride (sold under brand name of Root Out or you can buy just as the chemical). Cover with a plastic bag if rain is forecast. That'll kill it! Nothing else will grow there for at least 6 months though. When you remove the ivy from your wall the best tool is a wallpaper scraper - it lifts the ivy right off easily!

Ants in vegetable bags

You can buy ant nematodes which are a natural predator of ants. You mix with water and drench the affected area. It worked on an ant nest in a large container in my garden last year. You can buy them online - just search for 'ant nematode'

Scented flowers

For Spring, try Lilac - some varieties are more highly scented than others - and they need space! Also Hyacynths

For Summer - Lavender, Roses (repeat flowering giving scent all Summer), Jasmine (though it's a bit of a thug once it gets established and can swamp plants nearby), Night scented Stocks, Nicotiana Fragrant Cloud.
