Rosie - I know how to tell the difference based on the flowers, but not the leaves, what's the difference?

Gardening errors.....

In my very early gardening days, I pruned a standard fuschia to the ground. Safe to say, it didn't turn out okay

Thanks for the recommendation Verdun. I just looked up King of Hearts on Google and it's beautiful! I'm going to look out for that one at the nursery.  I have a spectabilis which I love and is the only real colour in my shady corner.

That's fascinating, I feel a little dumb, but I had never correlated cut roses as being the same as a regular cutting :0). I'm going to try this myself! Thanks!

Aubrietia is good, although its typically bedding I think, not sure whether it would be too aggressive for a pot?

English bluebells vs Spanish ones

Last spring, my mother-in-law gave me four bluebell plants after flowering which she asserted were English bluebells.  I put them in along with 50 or so English bluebells bulbs I bought.

They have now flowered and I can see they're either Spanish or hybrids with Spanish characteristics.  I pulled them out, but now looking around other gardens in our village there are more Spanish/hybrids than anything else.  My back garden is a combination of walled and fenced.  Am I fighting a losing battle here? Are they likely to get hybridised anyway?

Yes I would try seed as both of my sets germinated quite easily. Good luck!

Yes, they've bolted. Mine did the same, it was either too cold or I didn't water them enough, I'm going to try again with a fresh sowing this weekend and hopefully they'll do better!

What did you do in your garden today?

Got nothing done outside due weather but did buy some compost, alpines, gravel trays and trellis and paint - all ready for my bank holiday weekend jobs!

Thanks Liz!  I'm going to the hairdressers next week, I'll take a paper bag and bring home my trimmings! Luckily my hairdresser is training as a horticulturalist so hopefully she won't find it too weird
