Hi  Caroline CB.  Not sure about woodruff but it definately not cleavers.  Cleavers is the stuff that sticks to you. 

Potato plants

This is also my first year of growing potatoes.  I have some in a bag and some in the ground.  Can anyone tell me when is the best time to dig them up.  They are first earlies.  Do you have to wait until they have flowered?

Yes, I agree with auntie betty.  Fatsia japonica loves the shade and has lovely large leaves.

Thanks everyone for your help.  Glad to know about the bees liking them as I am a beekeeper and they need all the help they can get at the moment.  And no - Bookertoo - they dont come out in this weather although as soon as the sun shines they are out in force.

I have sown cerinthe seeds for the first time.  These are now ready for planting out.  My question is this:-  should I group them together in twos or threes or should they be planted singly?

Begonia Aricot shades

Yes, I agree.  Trailing begonias will form quite good tubers by the end of the year.  Just make sure you keep them dry over the winter then plant up again in the spring.

Ground elder in compost bin

No - no worms.  I do find some in there but think they just get in there from when I add weeds etc.  Think they are in the soil attached to the weeds.

I have 2 compost bins, both on concrete behind my shed.  I - or should I say my husband - turns the compost and we have never had any trouble with them being on concrete.  We end up with lovely compost.

christmas tree

We bought 2 very small potted christmas trees after christmas 3 years ago.  One didnt survive but the one that did is doing really well.  For the past 2 years we have brought it indoors as an extra christmas tree for our dining room, each year slightly bigger than the last.  Hopefully one year it will take the place of the large one we buy for our lounge.
