Talkback: Aphids

Posted: 22/06/2012 at 19:54

Argh! I've just found a load of aphids on my chillies in the greenhouse.  I've taken them out, squished as many as I could find and given them a couple of soapy water sprays as well as spraying the other greenhouse plants.

I think I'll leave the plants outside for a few days, we're due some more heavy rain which might wash any that I missed off the plants.  I hope it doesn't get too chilly for them.

Oh, that's pretty.

Fritillaria meleagris from seed?

I'm going to give that a go too, assuming it's the same procedure for other sorts of fritillaria.

Too late to plant more seeds?

Monty was sowing beans on Friday's Gardeners World.  Since only one of the eight I sowed germinated, I might try sowing some more as well.

All I have to do is find a space for them!  Can French beans be grown in pots?

seeds not germinated

I sowed some celeriac seeds, two batches about 3 or 4 weeks apart and there is not a sign of life from them at all.  I only got one French bean to germinate from the 8 that I sowed.  It's the first time I have tried either of these so I don't know how good at germinating they are normally.  My courgettes have been really bad this year; I think I sowed about 8 in total and only 2 have grown.

I have kale and rudbeckias coming out of my ears though.

Autumn sown sweet peas

I will definitely try sowing some in autumn this year.  I sowed 3 batches - January, February and March - no flowers yet but it at least one looks ready to start flowering so it won't be long.

I've tried growing them from seed a couple of times with no success.  I'll try again next year - third time lucky perhaps.

I was wandering what to do with my daffs in pots too, thanks Alina.

I quite fancied the idea of giving french beans a go but would I be too late if I sowed them now?  There's always next year.
