sambucus black lace cutting back? confusing advice

Posted: 26/06/2014 at 16:28

Mine is 6ft tall but no flowers. It's about 3 years old but this is the first year it has grown so much. Is it too late for flowers now? And as shazbod asks, how do you take cuttings?

Larvae in my pond

Hi - just spotted lots of these swimming about in my pond amongst my tadpoles but I've no idea whether I should be concerned.  They're tiny and move really quickly.  Can anyone identify them for me?

Although they look very like teeny tiny tadpoles, close up they have little bits sticking out all along their sides.

Ants

The other day I watched an ant tugging an earthworm (alive) which was about 2" long and fighting all the way....within 10 mins the ant's pals turned upto help. Amazing to watch - poor worm!

Thanks everyone.  Have done research now and you are all correct.  Easy once I knew what to look for.  I've just ordered a mix pack of Nematodes so I hope they arrive hungry.  They can join in the party that pansyface mentioned....get the little b****rs drunk then pounce!

How long will they take to work?

I've never heard them called Pollywogs before!  I have masses in the pond.

My raised beds are 3ft high. I planted some cauli and courgette and found some of them wilting........

These were hiding in the soil and amongst the roots of those not eaten already.  I also found one bursting out of a courgette stem.

I also found the following in the soil..

 and finally....

a tiny skinny wiry worm also in soil.

What are they?

Where did they come from (bed grew fab strawbwrries last year) ?

How do I get rid of them before they spread?

I really don't want to lose anything else.

Thanks Wilbur - was afraid I'd done something wrong.  Now a bit more relaxed!  Will now go and supervise the building effort , giving the boys the benefit of my advice.

I've planted 6 lilies and they are doing well...all but 2.  those seem to have droopy leaves instead of firm upward ones.  no sign of beetles, or any damage to leaves...anyone got advice?

I'll post a pic of my pond once OT and BIL finish building my greenhouse (they keep getting bits the wrong way round) - meantime I have a query.......my raised 1m sq pond was green and murky ubtil 2 days ago when it suddenly became crystal clear?? Do I have a pond cleanig genie working secretly or is there another explanation?

I also have loads of tadpoles - they seem to be feeding on the green algae on the pond liner but I gave them some minced lettuce as previoussly advised.  What do I have to do next to ensure they survive into frogs?

Sooo  excited cos the pond was only built last autumn.  Not many plants yet but they are growing really slowly - any advice?

Nematodes

It's mainly slugs and snails...I have a tiny (1m x 1m) raised pond that has a few tadpoles but am not confident they will survive to eat the slimy critters!  I,m sure the snails come eqipped with grappling hooks - my raised beds are table height!
