Thanks rose - the bugs were covering the surface of the compost - thousands of them....I'd have been up all night squashing them.....I've just had a look and they seem to be dead or dying now after their soapy shower.

I have a long narrow raised bed and had planted winter pansies.  Everywhere else they thrived but in this bed they were dying.  I lifted them, saw the dust on the surface...looked closer.....Yugh, millions of itsy bitsy greenflies.  Promptly sprayed with warn soapywater - have I done the right thing?  Will the bed need new compost?  Any advice warmly received.

Thanks for all the encouragement everyone. Pond built and partly sunk. It sits about 15" above ground. Breeze blocks under the liner to make some shelves and pond filled and left to settle before we trim the liner. Steps available for wildlife escape. Will put pics on soon.  Now I have to decide how to finish the top edge to secure the liner.   Suggestions welcome.

Wood bought, garden cleared, plan drawn.  Can anyone tell me if bricks or breeze blocks would be harmful in the water.  No fish planned, just plants (and hopefully a frog or two eventually!)

Hi. I recently got one of these carnivorous plants and it lives in my unheated greenhouse at the moment.  The g/h was chock a block with hoverflies and most of these have ended up as meals for the plant. I would like to know if it's possible to overfeed this hungry Horace?

Btw I have no dislike of hoverflies....I know they are good guys. I will probably have to find a new location for Horace soon or the flies will end up on the endangered species list.

I did. I'll leave it there then and see what happens. Thanks everyone. If it changes form, I'll post on here.

Wot a cheek Peter !  Confusion - it's a normal state for me when it comes to gardening. I try not to cause it in others though.  As suggested, I will try to keep it until it reveals what it is......what's the best way to keep it safe?  Please don't tell me to keep it somewhere in the house - my OH would have a fit!  I have an unheated greenhouse - would that do?

I've had a look at the links and I think it looks like the grey dagger but since I have no trees or fruit bushes I don't know where it came from.  Thanks for taking the time to help.

Can some knowledgable person tell me what this pupa will turn into?  It's about 1" long (2.5cm for youngsters ).  I thought pupas appeared in springtime - is it normal for a pupa to appear at this time of year.  The more I learn about gardening, (mostly from this site) the more I realise how much I still have to learn!
