I saw a plant as described in a catalogue recently...can't remember which one though . I noticed it because a few places round here have the plant and the seed pods are exactly as pictured.  The plant looks a bit like areally big sansivarious (?) - mother-in-law s tongue, with long stems. The catalogue identified it as Phornium, so I think Patty is spot on.

Thanks everyone. I hope to have the pond ready for spring.  I will wait in hopes for hopping visitors

Haisie - have you tried your local freegle or free cycle ?  You could put in a"wanted" ad. You never know.  I went to our local "Steptoes"  yard and he had an old metal hip bath and a big round metal bowl.....lying open to the elements (and had been for some time) and he wanted £50!  Each !    I'm just gonna dig a hole and line it.  You could do the same with a small wall to make the edge higher and include your ramp.

As I said above, I am thinking of adding a (very) small pond in my garden.....my question is......how on earth do frogs, toads etc find it?   I live in a town on the east coast of Scotland and unless the wildlife can read google maps, I cannot see how they'll know it's there!     I've heard the expression "If you build it, they will come" ....really ??  Will I have to import frog spawn from somewhere else?   Also, what is the smallest pond I'll need if I want frogs etc?

Probably more questions will follow.

Have watched.....look like elongated thin bees/wasps.  Like hover flies?  Watched one drag a beetle of some sort into a hole backwards. Didn't have camera or phone for pic. I will persevere.

Lol.  I'll keep a watch to see if it's bees. Thanks.

On wandering through my garden today,I spotted these holes.  They are in a narrow border which is covered with slates - no sand nearby.  Can anyone tell me what they are and are they friend or foe?

There are lots of them all over the border.

Thanks.

Poppy Fields

I have the oriental poppies in my garden pots (all pink except for one purple one!) But no red ones. If I want some for the 100 yrs remembrance, where it's the best place to buy?  I have never seen a packet of seeds for them on their own.

Sounds good....I love it when it's free!  Never get hubby to agree though - he's not the pee outside type and definitely not in favour of buckets for anyone!  Will have to use use a commercial product!

Ok I'll recycle!  Since its going to be quite tough and fibrous, should I use a compost speeder upper (Darn. What IS it called? )and if so what would you recommend ? The heap is an open one not in a bin.
