Compost in containers

Posted: 16/07/2013 at 14:01

My garden is all containers and high raised beds. I have several pots with plants that now need replacing or getting rid of altogether.  Can I just tip the whole thing (compost and plant ) into my compost heap or do I need to get rid somewhere else like my council garden bin?   The pots contained perennials so are thick with roots, but pest and disease free as far as I can tell.

Strawberries and blackfly

My strawberries are in a raised bed - and I mean "raised". They are up on legs to waist height which deters slugs and snails. They are netted to deter birds but the fruit is now being bored into by little black flies do I stop them ruining my crop?

Good or Evil

I found this fellow on my Trumpet flower leaves.  It's not too big and looks like a dead leaf.  Can anyone tell me what it is (I suspect some kind of moth), is it friend, foe or neither and where would it have come from?  Does this mean I have caterpillars If so I can see no sign of any.

I put him on the wooden edge of a flower bed and he is stil there so not too lively!

 Can anyone help?

Have a lovely Sambucca -Black Lace growing in a border. I want to move it to a different location but don't want to damage it. It is about 2" tall and 2" wide and it's presently showing new growth. Can it be moved and if so, when's the best time?

Thanks in advance.

I've planted strawberries for the first time this year....Elsanta.  I have a reasonable amount of fruit although some haven't produced any. Loads of runners though. My question do you overwinter them. They are in a raised bed. I have a walk in greenhouse - do they go in there and do I water them in winter?

Have you noticed I've no idea what I'm doing?

Thanks Bob. That's a useful tip. I think I'll cut them down as I would love a second flowering if possible. They are so pretty.

Making something out of nothing

I used an old loo and cistern fixed to the back wall of my garden and planted a cordyline in the loo and taking plant in the cistern.  Got a lot of attention from the neighbours. Alas it fell to bid after a couple of years of frost.

A beautiful morning here in Montrose and as I was wandering around my garden I noticed that the Incarvillea Delavayi that I planted as bulbs has produced seed pods where the flowers have dropped.  Can I keep and plant these? Should I cut the flowered stems back or leave them like we do tulips etc?  They are grown in a pot -should I lift them for the winter or leave them be?

Can you tell I've never grown them before?
