Poppy Fields

Posted: 28/07/2013 at 15:01

I have the oriental poppies in my garden pots (all pink except for one purple one!) But no red ones. If I want some for the 100 yrs remembrance, where it's the best place to buy?  I have never seen a packet of seeds for them on their own.

Sounds good....I love it when it's free!  Never get hubby to agree though - he's not the pee outside type and definitely not in favour of buckets for anyone!  Will have to use use a commercial product!

Ok I'll recycle!  Since its going to be quite tough and fibrous, should I use a compost speeder upper (Darn. What IS it called? )and if so what would you recommend ? The heap is an open one not in a bin.

Compost in containers

My garden is all containers and high raised beds. I have several pots with plants that now need replacing or getting rid of altogether.  Can I just tip the whole thing (compost and plant ) into my compost heap or do I need to get rid somewhere else like my council garden bin?   The pots contained perennials so are thick with roots, but pest and disease free as far as I can tell.

Strawberries and blackfly

My strawberries are in a raised bed - and I mean "raised". They are up on legs to waist height which deters slugs and snails. They are netted to deter birds but the fruit is now being bored into by little black flies ...how do I stop them ruining my crop?

Good or Evil

I found this fellow on my Trumpet flower leaves.  It's not too big and looks like a dead leaf.  Can anyone tell me what it is (I suspect some kind of moth), is it friend, foe or neither and where would it have come from?  Does this mean I have caterpillars If so I can see no sign of any.

I put him on the wooden edge of a flower bed and he is stil there so not too lively!

Sambucca

Have a lovely Sambucca -Black Lace growing in a border. I want to move it to a different location but don't want to damage it. It is about 2" tall and 2" wide and it's presently showing new growth. Can it be moved and if so, when's the best time?

Thanks in advance.

Toscana Strawberries

I've planted strawberries for the first time this year....Elsanta.  I have a reasonable amount of fruit although some haven't produced any. Loads of runners though. My question is..how do you overwinter them. They are in a raised bed. I have a walk in greenhouse - do they go in there and do I water them in winter?

Have you noticed I've no idea what I'm doing?

Thanks Bob. That's a useful tip. I think I'll cut them down as I would love a second flowering if possible. They are so pretty.
