Late winter cuttings - what next

Posted: 22/04/2013 at 08:51

Thanks Verdun - you're a mine of information.

I'll put that in my notebook for future reference.  Did have mine in a covered propergator on top of a cupboard in my utility area, which has a perspex roof, but they got too hot so I removed the cover.  Think'll move them to a lower position out of direct light now and perhaps put its cover back.

Late winter cuttings - what next

Red Dahlia how are your cineraria cuttings doing?   I took my cuttings last weekend (14 Apr), only one is looking a little weary as yet, so am hopeful of a positive outcome.

Pleased to hear your lupins made it Yvonne - I find it quite disheartening when plant fail to thrive or return after winter

No, sorry can't remember the colour, possibly pink.  With the weather as it was last year I didn't pay much attention to my garden.  It was propergated from a dry root bought in Wilkinsons.  I have another in a pot which is doing well and I think I will split it - spread the love!  Was so pleased the seeds germinated just hope they continue to thrive.

Just to update on my lupin seeds (sown 1 April) - the ones outside in a propergator in a sheltered south facing corner, close to the house, have germinated (4 of the 6 sown). Of the other 4, in an unheated utility, with a perspex roof on top of the dishwasher only 1 has germinated.  So I think I will be moving them outside this weekend.  I was surprised the outside ones germinated more sucessfully, but would seem that's what they like.

Could it be Pieris Mountain Fire?

Under trampoline plants?

We had the same problem (when we had a trampoline - took it out last year).  The only thing that grew under it were ferns, which had self-seeded.  There may not be enough light in the middle for anything to grow but I bet there are shade loving plants that would grow happily around the edge.

Thanks your advice everyone - its a releif to know my time and week long aches haven't been for nothing  .

Bob - yes it is irritating that websites don't update info.  Good thing you and other 'wise owls' are there and keep us informed.  Thanks for the link.

Raised beds with decking boards

Has anyone used decking boards for make raised borders?  I have started to use them, but have read on this web site http://www.allotment.org.uk/articles2/How_To_Build_a_Compost_Bin.php, "Do not use pressure-treated wood, as it has poisonous levels of copper and chromium, and there is evidence that arsenic can leach into your compost."    The boards I am using are "pressure treated with a copper-based wood preservative".  Could I use them if I line the inside edge with polythene, so that it isn't in direct contact with the soil?  Sorry if it seems I have answered my own question, but just wondered if anyone had used them with no ill-effects to plants/soil.  If they are bad for the garden can anyone suggest a cost effective alternative. Thanks
