Now to show my ignorance. I have a huge cosmos growing next to the front door and I don't remember putting any seed down there this year. There was also one in the same spot last year which I cut down in autumn when it died off. Could it have survived the winter and grown again? Or is that not possible?

Geoff, do not mention the c word again or you will have to stand in the corner. I am also a winter grump though.

A bean trench is the way to go I reckon - did one this year and the beans seem to like it. Becks, as there's only you and Jess, I'd say one wigwam each of runners and french beans would be enough. Don't do what I did the first year though and plant dwarf french beans and then wonder why they weren't climbing up the canes!

Becks, my tomatoes are about that size as well. That is, on the plants that haven't got blight!

I like the emblem - a bit like our village emblem which has a crossed fork and spade.

I have to work wth someone really really thick - and he's got a 'personal hygiene' problem on top of that. And its especially bad in warm weather.....my exchanges with him tend to be extremely brief! Very difficult as sometimes it takes 3 goes to explain something. Sometimes I just give up!

Getting hotter here as the day progresses, and hotter still tomorrow and Sunday. Probably no duvet at all!

I hate it when plans have to be changed or are not followed through so can sympathise, Dan. My plan for tomorrow is painting a window frame so I need to be at it early, before the sun moves round!

Then I intend to make a courgette cake or two.....

Geoff, how did you guess? And I'm afraid my cake never arrived. Will have to be content with a pack (or two) of mini chocolate fingers that are currently in the desk drawer.

I can recommend having two birthdays! But I only celebrate one of course.

Becks, next time take Jess with you and suggest he looks after her while you go and get this fantastic job that must be waiting for you. Take chocolate as well and feed her that, then let her wipe sticky fingers all over the place. And crayons so that she can 'help' him with his paperwork. That might make him more understanding.
