What's eaten my rose?

Posted: 27/06/2013 at 11:39

I planted a lovely new rose the other day and all well for a few days, then suddenly one morning nearly all the leaves have gone - there's virtually nothing left of them, just a tiny bit of green on the stalk. Not sawfly I don't think but as nothing left to see can't really tell. I do have rabbits around but don't think this was them as no sign (droppings) in the area and normally they eat the lot, stalks etc. Could it be pigeons or pheasants as have lots of them around?

I have a waterbutt attached to my summerhouse and despite cleaning it vigorously and scrubbing it until the water is totally clean, every time it rains the water ends up sligthly green and frothy. Why is that and is it still safe to use?

Thanks Dovefromabove, sounds about right. Hopefully now they are in the shade they should perk up.

Bees or wasps?

No mine look exactly like LeadFarmer's, no distinct stripes but yellow edge to belly. Do wool carder bees dig into soil?

Not sure but I'd like to know too as I have a small group trying to burrow into the soil. Not sure what they are up to.

Cornus refusing to grow

Posted: 09/06/2013 at 15:40

I have a cornus sanguinea midwinter fire which I planted about five months ago but it has refused to grow since. It's leaves are going yellow and very little newgrowth is appearing. I have clay soil so moved it and dug in lots of organic compost and watered well but still no movement. What would be killing it?

It's cooler today if that's any consolation! I thought they wanted/needed plenty of sun so thought it would do well on the patio. I've now moved it around so it's shaded. hopefully it will pick up.
