Poorly Chicken

Posted: 24/08/2014 at 20:23

Thanks for your feedback guys....

No red mite and not moulting, very well ventilated and the hen house is cleaned weekly with fresh bedding, without fail...had a look on another website and it could be a lack of oxygen affecting her lungs In that case, the lady noticed the poorly hen at the beginning of the day and the hen died the same day :'( Hope this isn't the case with mine. I will check in the morning (or my husband will) and let you know.

Poorly Chicken

Hi all,

I have 4 Black Rock chickens which I bought 3 years ago. They were really good layers, pretty much giving me 4 eggs a day until around October last year. I now have on average, 6/8 a week. Over the last 3 weeks they hardly eat anything and have become a lot quieter. Today I noticed one of them has stayed inside all day and after just checking on her she looks really poorly

Her wattle leans to one side and is turning black, when I tried to move her she looked unsteady and lethargic. The other 3 seem fine with bright red wattles and are full of beans, although no eggs today!

Does anyone know what could be the matter with her?

Easter Weekend

I gave my rubarb some well deserved TLC, hey Dovefromabove!!

I also dug over my veg patch, erected wigwams, weeded all borders, cleaned the hen house, painted shelving, had a trip to Shrewsbury, entertained family Easter Sunday and enjoyed quite a few cuppa's in the sunshine....phew, very busy, but lovely Easter!!

Thank you Dovefromabove....nice to speak to you again! at the moment it has a huge stalk coming up from the middle so I'm presuming it's bolted... So I just cut that off from the bottom, treat it to some TLC as obelixx has said, then take the fruit just till the end of June? I did take more than one crop last year and it was a new plant. I also moved it towards the end of last year..

Thank you obelixx. Will they still fruit as normal throughout the year?

Wine making

Hi, I need advise as a first time wine maker.

I'm making Elderberry wine following a River Cottage recipe. I'm at the stage where its been in a bucket, loosely covered for three days. It then says to decant into bottles/demijon for the vigourous fermenting to take place. I bought a plastic demijon from my local market. My problem is...it doesn't say to seive the berries out so, I;ve left them in, in doing so, the whole amount doesn't fit into the demi, so should I leave berries out or liquid and the lid doesn't fit and I'm not sure how the air lock works. Should I push it tight or leave it loosely on top or remove it all together. I've literally just decanted it, its full to the bim, bubbling and leaking from the lid!!! HELP!!

Lavender - how to plant/space out so as to let plants thrive?!

Posted: 27/08/2013 at 12:07

My Lavender is in its second year. I cut them back around this time last year to just above the 'woody bit' They looked lovely last year, quite dense and bushy, this year however they haven't looked as good. I'm trying to create a low hedge which I've seen in someones garden, something I envy a little!  Am I right to cut back now and should I be brutal with it or should it be just a trim?? Never been sure of cutting back and my garden suffers for it
