To water, or not to water

Posted: 11/04/2013 at 18:23

Hi Guys,

I've planted some flower seeds (which I can't spell but sounds like this...mes mer ran thums ) followed the instructions on the pack and put them in my greenhouse but it didn't mention watering them. Having just watched Monty planting flower bulbs, he said the flowers need water to germinate...is this all flowers, should I water mine?

PS I covered them with a layer of vermiculite stuff, please excuse my ignorence.

To Busy-Lizzie...when you say germinated what exactly does that mean?  yes, I'm a complete novice. Does this show any signs, as I said there's nothing, just sad looking soil

I planted Sweet pea seeds around the 4/3/13, 5 to a pot watered them just the once as told and left them in my greenhouse...totally forgot to bring them inside where it was warmer to start them off. Looking at them now they are bone dry and doing nothing  Can I do anything with them or should I just start again? I have everlasting ones on the go which are coming on fine but as last year was my first year with them and they were beautiful I wanted to have a really good mix this year. Whats your thoughts guys??

Had a quick look round perch, can't see any blood and no obvious feathers lying around so I'm off to Wynestay to get me some purple spray and some poultry house spray.....got my 4 eggs today so shes not egg bound!

Its a bit odd the way they moult, its literally a perfect circle right under her tail....if they they have a tail? Will check for blood and feathers.

Hi Dovefromabove,

I'm fairly new to this and have not had to do anything so far apart from the general looking after them. I'll of had them a year in April. The hen house was new so its not been treated as yet, was planning on doing it as soon as the weather picks up. I've not treated them for mites yet either although I do add mite powder on every clean. Will I be able to see them clearly?

How do I up the protein level? They have laying pellets and scraps from the kitchen, ie; salad, veg, bread and maybe a little cooked pasta from time to time. I'll add the tray of sand as its a bit of a mud bath in there at the moment!

When I cleaned them on Sunday I didn't notice any feathers, I haven't noticed any pecking either. I will keep an eye on them tomorrow and come back to you.               Thank you

Hi Sotongeoff, I noticed it yesterday for the first time, I have 4 hens in total and got 4 eggs Monday, 2 yesterday and 3 today which is quite normal at the moment. If she is laying it would be usual to get 4 tomorrow. Because there are 4 of them, I'm never sure which has laid and which hasn't. She seems OK other than the bald patch.

I did read on another site that she could be 'eggbound' which could be fatal!
