Posted: 23/09/2013 at 22:32

A few years ago I planted some beans I d grown from seed . They were yellow pencil thin  and the plant grew into a lowish bush  . I cannot remember what they were and have looked in fothergills but I cant find any described as bush type plants .

Can anyone help please, i would be very grateful , thanks in advance .X

"Plant in ericaceous compost" not specific enough!

Do not plant  any deeper into the hole than  the pot that it is planted in  now . Top it each year with ericacius compost . I do mine in October .

Yes , lots of water for the roots to swell , it may not be too late try drowning them at regular intervals - you know what i mean -n a bit like our  summers we had before this one!

Hi Stacey Docherty , did you find any Astrantia seed ? I have just taken a mixture of seed from mine , they would be a mixture of  pink and white  though ? mine are late flowering  so I would have to dry them off some more . I   know you have to sow these seed fresh .

Anyone know what this is?

Thanks Green Beanz , I had'nt realised there was a blue and a white , do these grow as tall as the purple and pink ?

Now I know what its called I'm going to look through the seed  pages for blue and white !

The pink and purple are lovely mixed together  so WOW!!  I'm on to it !

My mum has bought  Perovskia atri  "Blue Spire"     she gardens in a very open spot on near the moors  - not much protection from the weather. she tried this a few years back but lost it through winter . Is it a one year shrub - does anyone manage to overwinter this - if so how please ?   Thanks from my mum in advance .

Hi  ,  under our holly tree ( and I too took a lot of lower branches off for the same reason )  I find oddly enough that hosta's grow well if there is only a little light getting in - and being surrounded by holly leaves as a mulch for most of the year it keeps the weeds down and the sluggs away. alpine aqualiga too .plus many of the other suggestions.

I keep the holly  leaves as they are a good mulch even in the summer they keep the moisture around the plants and they dont dry up so quick .They wilt a little but after a water they perk up .

Hi pokhim , Im all for these type of collections  , they give a good selection usualy . Many times they are a good mix of tall for the back so forth and ending up with the small at the front. If you go for the oes which will come year after year they bunch up well . I can only think of one dissadvantage but its all in the ground work - check what growing conditions each plant needs and also the compost ie alpines like sandy gritty  mixture  though many plants are happy in a multi purpos compost .

Hope this helps .

What's been eating my shrubs?

How do you use Provado ? Years ago I used a vine weevil killer . A small amount was mixed with water  and watered into the roots . This stuff was a white granuals sort of thing you used a measure which was thimble size to 7 ltrs of water . such as this I dont think would harm other insects . the intention was to kill the grubs which would be on the roots. The grubs are fat and about half inch long and a brownish dot on the end.
