my curcubit plants are dying off

Posted: 21/05/2013 at 22:48

It could have been the rainwater if it was from a waterbutt. I find that tepid tapwater is best for seeds and seedlings. I dont use the rainwater until the plants are the full size. As I have had problems with damping off. I enquired at the garden center , they said unless rainwater is coming from the skies  onto the plants it isnt fresh . while it is in the waterbutt it can get contaminated while it is stood. so maybe it was that

Quick growing rhododendron or azalea - is there such a thing?

Posted: 21/05/2013 at 22:38

I too have bought from Morrisons , They are very good value ( I find almost every shrub is reasonable and very good quality . The ones I bought last year had put 4 inches to each Branch  before I had them planted. The new foilage is the lighter green .They need erecacius compost , and lots of soft rainwater. You cant ever overwater them.let us know what you end up buying .- the scented ones are beautifull.

Gaillardia death

Posted: 21/05/2013 at 20:55

I love gaillardia , but grow it each year from seed - mine doesnt survive so I understood it to be an annual . This year If I get the heating sorted in my greenhouse I shall try and over winter some . Are yours alright until the first frosts ? I lose some of mine then unless they are protected by other foilage such as phormium .

It is the same with Rudbeckia's too .

How did I kill my Calluna?

Posted: 21/05/2013 at 20:46

I grow mine in Eracsius compost  and give them rainwater same as  azaleas . But they can easily dry out . Early days I  tried with quite a few differant ones and lost them . The above way is the only way I seem to be keeping them . I have them in the same flower bed as Camelia's and Azalea's.

Your doing well with your Camelia if your using tap water .

You cant seem to get Peat these days but isnt that what heather on the moor's grows in ,  and that spreads well ?

Looking for some advice on growing plants from cuttings please??

Posted: 21/05/2013 at 20:30

The nut bush type Hazel is easy to take cuttings , but I have never taken contorted  Hazel.

But this is how I do mine , take heel cuttings , use rooting powder and put a poly bag over.- this may though revert back to its original Hazel, as usualy happens when it has been grafted.
