Oh no, lily beetles are back!

Posted: 06/06/2013 at 20:30

I didnt know about the lily beatle's eggs so will start to check under the leaves ,  at least using the oil will get a good shine , wonder if it will make the leaves slippery for the beatles . At the moment all the lily beatles I catch that would eat my lillies go into my carniverous plants .

Lily beatles eat my plants , I pick them off by hand , I feed to my Carniverous plants on the windowsill.  Feed  to a Carniverous plant and stand back and listen to the scream !

They eat my plants - my plants eat them !

Talkback: Ruby tiger moth

Posted: 06/06/2013 at 19:57

The Ruby moth is beautiful  , I first  saw one a few years ago and have not seen one since .The iridescant  sheen of the partly closed  wings has come out well . When its wings are fully open, apart from its plumpish tummy it can be mistaken for a very attractive  butterfly. Just shows what beauty lies beneath the wings!

Ericaceous Compost Recommendations

Erin composts usualy alright  3 for £10  paying a decent price ,you should get a decent compost . I find B&Q verb I think it is called is absolute rubbish  . When I joined the Forums a few years back there was a big discussion about B&Qs compost

a few of the companies seemed to go down hill  round about that time I seem to remember .

What do you do with Allium Bulbils

Posted: 06/06/2013 at 18:47

I do this each year with my Alliums , there are several Alliums which produce the bulbils .I sow them as Berghill says but  I add a handfull of grit .. The bulbils will turn a dark brown towards Autumn .Just put a bit off grit  on top too and put them outside. Then forget about them they do take a while but its worth the wait. If you have the room sink the whole pot in the ground leaving about an inch showing . Some Alliums have the seed too . I tried that last  year  but they were hard to get out wont bother a second time- stick with the bulbils.

If you like lilies there is an orange lily which has the bulbils at each leaf joint, I set these in the same way and they germinate the year after .

Sorry cant think of the name off the lilly .

shrubs

Posted: 04/06/2013 at 17:59

I have sandy , peaty ,well drained soil . I am trying to fill it with shrubs but a selection so that there is always something of intrest.

A large ,wide border already has several rhodedendrons, azaleas, Broom , dogwoods,  budleas, phormium, skimmias, several of the josephs coat shrubs- cant remember exact name.

I still have lots of space I am wanting to fill- the idea is to fill full of shrubs so weeds dont grow through = a low maintanence border.
