Is Vermiculite dangerous

Posted: 19/05/2012 at 22:55

Hi

I address this to Welshonion ,   information came from The Wikipedia .A few days earlier   which I refer to a lot. I don't think the information IS printed to cause A PANIC. It is  awareness that is all . I myself would prefer to be aware of these points than to be ignorant . I recently lost a good friend and family member to the terrible killer illness, Lung Cancer  caused by asbestos. My father worked  where vermiculite was used in great quantities in building 25 years ago . So NO !  I am not causing panic just awareness. As I said I use this myself -it is good  for germinating seed. It does keep them warm .

Red rhubarb leaves

Hi figrat. Rhubarb does not like to be planted too deep . I usualy force a clump of mine, a differant one each year . This  sometimes alters the colour of the leaves , Ive had a few pinkish leaves this year I put it down to being forced . What I would do is dig up the clump and replant it in a differant spot or in a large container . My friend always grows hers in home made pots using old tyers. she puts about 4 together uses this and tops with well rotted manure or chicken manure pellets. She swears by this method .

Myself I wouldnt fancy it though she swears blind it does not taste rubbery !

Cucumbers

Posted: 10/05/2012 at 21:02

ceris has given you most of the advce which I 'd have given. At the momant my cucumbers are in the greenhouse around 7 ins high and doing very well . I have them in a pot , I then place them in a long polythene bag  . ( I find  hovis bread wrappers great for this) I put 4 sticks into the pot  for supporting the polythene bag - so it doesnt  get on the plant. This protects it through  our unsettled weather conditions and cold nights. I leave this in place until june. I grow Melons too in this way, then like the cucumbers pot on to bigger pots when it warms up.They like the same humid conditions as cucumbers.

Is Vermiculite dangerous

I .use this instead of grit, But I was told recently that it is used by builders as an insolation,  so maybe there is some truth in it. On saying that, it does help the seeds - maybe by keeping them warm !

What's the weather like in your area?
