Encouraging Quicksilver to grow bushy instead of straight up

Posted: 13/05/2013 at 13:47

Most shrubs will bushout if you cut from the top - but just check up  that cutting into old wood will not kill the shrub .

Dont learn like I did , I cut a beautiful Broom in half as it was getting too big . Then found out when it died that you only cut off into NEW WOOD   in the    Broom family .

propagation boasts and failures

For Hebe cuttings Take  heal cuttings , after dipping in rooting powder push several in a mixture of gritty compost . put in propergator or put a poly bag over . I usualy cut the leaves in half - just so I can keep a check on new growth . when new leaves have started to grow this is usualy a sign they are rooted . I leave mine outside in shadey area's. Some are quicker than others.

propagation boasts and failures

I bought a few Phorniums from a garden centre , They were massive and weighed a ton . Reduced to £8 from £30 . The rainbow warrier was split up into 5 big pieces . The green Wave was split into 3 it had been £20  down to£8 . Bought another lost label Phornium and split  it into 3 . They are all still big plants with massive leaves .

My first Phornium , P . Tennex we bought in Cornwal over 20 yrs ago ,  Split it up  straight away and gave some away,

During the bad winter we had in2012   we thought we had lost them all . But we pulled out the soggy leaves and cut the remaining down to about 10 inches. That summer they allstarted sending new shoots up .I now have a selection of lovely phorniums.

Why won't my Oullins Gage fruit?

I could be wrong here but is it like  Choysa ( mexican orange) which I once had , I gave this lots of food and it got massive , realy good condition . I then read that you shouldnt overfeed or it all goes into the growth. So I stopped feeding and the year after year it was full of beautiful white flowers . It got to a beautiful size and then we moved .

What grey leaved plants for under trees

What grey leaved plants can I put under a holly tree please ? , trunk is 5ft before branches start

pansies primrose primulas etc....

Posted: 12/05/2013 at 09:57

I find most type of primroses grow well under decidues trees / summer flowering shrubs  ( exept the ones which need lots of water, I cannot grow Bullimia type - please exuse spellings), when  the primroses have  finished flowering  they die down and the shrubs come into there own .At the end of the season the decidues trees/ shrubs lose there leaves and the primroses start again .

Talkback: Turkscap lilies

PS. Just read the top letter about smell  it may work but this one didnt which I tried for the same reason .,  . I planted  from Arum lilies  family "Dracunculus " - These stink and I mean stink  so dont try it . It made no differance whatsoever. Might give the garlic a go though -will try anything once in the aid of gardening.

Right this is what I do! I havent read  the rest yet,but maybe others do this too .

I treated myself to some carniverus plants from      "   jersy direct  "  they were not cheap but they were a decent size and ready for  feeding . Only thing you need to do is keep the plant pot in about 1 inch of rain water  and they must not dry out. I bought the indoor ones but you can get them for outdoor and they ARE supposed to stand below zero conditions.

I use a see through wide topped plastic bottle with a cap,I put the bottle underneath and knock them into it . You have to be quick cos the bliters fly . AND THAT MY FRIENDS  ,  .................IS LUNCH FOR MY PLANTS !  wait until you have a good number. It doesnt take long .

I'm so cruel ! but after you have put in about 10 at once into the same funnel you can actualy hear them squealing !!!    AND this is where someone might put me in the loony Bin - I stand there saying to my plant  " enjoy your lunch cos these lovely orange beatles have eaten there last meal ......"

so the lesson in this is........ the beatles have eaten my plants so in return my plants have eaten the beatles - afterall ......alls fair in love and war !!!!!!!!!!!

I ask you my friends  Am  I going loopy or what ?
