Last year I bought an Arum Lily at the back end of summer from Morrisons supermarket . I got a few odd looks as there were hardly any leaves, but loads of what I assumed were seed s . I only paid £1-50 for it . My husband didnt bat an eyelid - he knows what I'm like for taking chances . Anyway I cut all the lank stems and seed heads off . I left them to dry . $ weeks later I planted them in a gritty compost , watered well and left them under the green house shading . This year the small plants have been coming up for the last 3 months . I have potted them on they are making fine plants and good roots . I shall leave them in the greenhouse untill June next year and pot them on other than that , play it by ear. If you have patience it is intresting this way .Up to now I have 50 young plants and they are still popping up so it could well be 60plus. not bad for what some would say a dead plant!

birds flying into windows

I have a similar problem with my greenhouse's . Birds fly  in and wreck the plants in there panic of trying tpo get out . So I have just bought some cheap large about 12 inch long colourful  wall stickers from  BM bargains. These I have stuck  on the  inside as well as a couple on the outside   , it is just an experiment .  The sticking power is quite strong but I am hopeful . They had an assortment og designs from flowers to story book characters .

corms, tubers or what?

They remind me of Alstrameria lillies  , Alstromeria  are fragile and a crisp sort of root , it breaks very easil but every bit will grow into a plant .

can anyone tell me what this plant is?

I  envy you for being able to grow this plant  . What type of soil are you growing in ? I have tried to grow  Ligullaria from seed also have bought the plant but I have no luck , it dies on me . I have sandy / peaty soil .

Butternut squash when to sow seeds

Posted: 20/07/2013 at 20:10

For Squash If you are short of room use canes  to support the plant and tie up  as you do with any other plants . I find it is easier to control as it prevents the natural rooting of the plant . If they are on the ground the runners  root at each leaf axel . which I find  without controling with the canes they  get into flower beds  and will even attach themselves to an hawthorne hedge.

As regards when to grow and how ? Bob has it Spot On ! Once they have the first 2 proper leaves they grow very quickly .  Maybe its the veg version of   " mile a minuit plant !"
