free plants/bulbs/seeds from mag

Hi 80smaniac, Yes, I am a novice gardener and just starting out and think the plants we receive for £4.90 are great. I have sent for quite a lot of them over the past year or so and when I have looked at how much I'm saving versus the garden centre its amazing....I mainly send for the bulbs, perennials and I am really pleased with what I have been sent. They have all been in great condition when received and are doing well in the garden as I am writing this....................have a nice day

Novice Gardener needs help

Hi, Thank you so much for all your advice.

My side garden is going to be more of a gravel bed with my potting shed, composter and water butt with a little seating area and a couple of raised beds. I like the idea of checking the soil so will get a testing kit this weekend and let you know what we have, I know the guy that lived here always applied horse maure to this part of the garden as he used it for vegetable growing so could be lovely soil under all the rubbish that is there already.Is there a chart or a guide somewhere on the web which tells you what are acid loving plants and which aren't - could be useful.Can we upload pictures on here so I can put 'before' and 'after' pictures for everyone to see?

I like the idea of putting the plants in and then putting bulbs in to come up in between - will try this. I will also have a look at whats on offer this weekend at the garden centre. There are so many gorgeous plants I want them all - heeheehee - wish me luck xx

Plastic bags for seedlings

Thank you so much to all of you...................being a relatively new gardener I thought I would try and do it 'by the book' - when ever I have seen pictures of gardeners putting trays/pots etc in plastic bags they have always been clear ones but I know better.................I have a large roll of opaque blue freezer bags and can get on with my potting today in the confidence that my seeds will germinate...............I am also going to the supermarket tomorrow for the weekly shop..dare I say ASDA............and wiill be keeping a furtive eye out for all the surplus packaging products you have mentioned....................I am also new on here and this was one of my first posts and am astounded at all the help I have received.thank you so much...although you know this is going to now lead to morre questions for you alll being as you are all so knowledgeable gardeners...........Hope to tallk to you al again soon, wish me luck with the freezer bags............

Plastic bags for seedlings

Help.............I plan to sow my last summer perennials this week and all the advice says if you haven't got a propogator put the trays in sealed plastic bags..I can only find opaque blue sandwich/freezer bags that are large enough to hold some of my seed trays.....do they have to be clear or are are the blue ones ok? if I need clear ones where do you get them from that are large enough to hold the seed trays and also  large enough to be able to tie them?....thank you

I bought seed compost though for my seeds so not that bad Mophead!! I bought water retaining gel and forgot to put it in my pots - how mad is that!

Anyway please can someone tell me whet the different numbers are on john winnes compost -are they for specific things?

A tiny gift fron last summer

Oh how lovely!  Is  night scented stock a perennial plant?

I am looking for some perennial plants that are quite low maintenence to plant on my side garden near raised beds, just to brighten the area up in summer months. I would also like to have some evergreens but being a novice gardener I don't know where to start - there are so many plants available I don't know which is right for the area I have................

Novice Gardener needs help

Hi, there are so many plants out there that I am getting very very confused .............perennial - hardy -half-hardy etc etc etc.........I just need plants that will come year after year - look nice and stay healthy without much maintenence as I also want to start to grow some salads.........can anyone advise me on some summer flowering plants that will do all of this or am I wishful thinking? some evergreen would be good too to give all round interest in the dull cold days of winter, this is for my dise garden that is south facing and open to the elements and quite windy...........thank you

Hi Adam, We are 'new' gardeners and thoroughly enjoying our attempts at growing from seed etc however we are having an 'overhaul' of our side garden which is south facing and open to the elements and we wish to have a few raised beds with some perennial flowers/wildflowers growing amongst and around the two raised beds, some that are preferably evergreen to give interest all year and some for summer colour.What do you suggest?
