Conditions for raising seedlings

Posted: 05/02/2014 at 19:58

I would like to grow a few vegetable plants from seed (sweetcorn, cucumber, celeriac, pumpkins) but don't have a lot of in-door space facing south.  Can these grow well in a north facing room?

The other option is to make/find a cold frame or mini greenhouse.  What temperature does it need to be for these seedlings to grow well in these conditions?

Thanks for any advice.

Do I plant my biennial bellis daisy out or keep it inside?

Presumably they don't need a long cold spell outside to 'know' that it is year two and the right year to flower as they are biennials?

They are now repotted so hopefully will be happier.

Thanks for the responses Dovefromabove.

Potting them up sounds like a good idea, I'll do that and wait for a bit.  They are in such shallow soil in the tray it keeps drying out  so bigger pots should help.

I know I should of planted them out in the autumn but the plants didn't look strong enough so I kept them indoors.  Do I wait for some frost free days and plant them out now or just wait for spring?  Will they still flower?  Photo below.

Can you identify this rose please?

Thanks for your replies.  I can smell other roses but nothing from this one.

I was trying to identify it so that I know whether to treat it like a shrub or attach it to the fence like a climber.  The stems are very long (2 - 3 metres) and hang down so do I assume it is a climber? Thanks

It has been flowering for a couple of months and has no fragrance that I can smell.  I'm not sure if it is a climber (it hangs down rather and is propped up with bamboo) or a shrub that needs serious pruning.

Thanks, looks interesting.

Thanks, I'll water, mulch and wait.  That's great if it isn't about to keel over and die.  I've got a clematis armandii nearby that is mostly brown now, I don't think will last long and I don't want to be back to bear fence in a few weeks!

Thanks once again.

What is Beechgrove?

I have watered it every day when there has been no rain but the soil does look very dry quickly.  Do I spray it with the anti-fungus chemical now?
