It has been a while since I looked at the GW forum pages and I have to say was shocked to see the new layout.

What was wong with the other one?     This one is lacking so much information and it is difficult to browse currrent topics. With the old one, we could see and access all the discussions of interest.  These pages are sterile, mimimalist and lacking colour.  No-one would ever recognise them as gardening pages.  Who on earth came up with this layout and even more, who approved it?

I am thoroughly disgusted and will be looking for alternative gardening forums.

Are you eating your home grown fruit and veg yet?

We are eating delicious allotment grown brocolli now.  Have been for the last fortnight or so.  Nothing quite like it. Such a beautiful colour and delicate taste and only takes about 5 minutes to cook.  Really recommend it. Need to  plant some autumn varieties to see us through a longer harvest period. Yum!

Thanks everyone.  Have put some on compost heap and will keep some to put around my blackcurrants in the garden. Redcurrants and raspberries can have some another time. So nice to be able to use throw-away stuff to benefit further growing!

Thanks folks.

What about red currants? Will be planting out  them and raspberries in my now-organised allotment in the next couple of weeks.

My allotment neighbour has old dried and dead  brambles as well as young stuff that keep growing over into my plot so I cut them back to the boundary and used them. I also added some of my runner bean stems as I had so many  and some strawberry plants.

brussel sprouts

Hi AlI. This is my first year of growing sprouts so I also need some guidance.

I notice that one of my allotment neighbours has stripped off  a lot of the leaves up towards the top of the stem. Presumably this  to allow light to get to the growing sprouts. Also, my sprouts are rather small so should I have added some fertiliser during the growing period and if so, what sort? I will certainly stake them next year because they are leaning rather at present.

Is there anything in the garden or allotment that would benefit from the ash that I have left over  from the incinerator?

Can I use any leaves for leaf mould?

Posted: 30/10/2014 at 22:25

How long would sycamore leaves take to rot down? The stalks seem to be rather tough so  could I use them or should they go to the rubbish tip or is there something I could add  that could speed up the composting process?

Can I grow more raspberry canes from the seeds from my raspberries?

I was told that if you interfere with the roots of raspberries (i.e. dig around the roots to remove weeds)  they go wild and send suckers out far and wide. This has happened to me on one of my allotments which I am about to abandon as I don't have the time for both I want to plant more rasps on other plot. Does this mean that if I dig out a clump, tease some stalks apart and plant them that this will happen again or should I learn by my mistakes and buy new ones and just be more careful next time with weeding?

Harvesting Butternut Squash

Ditto mine Barry. Massive and take up so much space. Have had acknowledgement from Johnsons and am awaiting their comments. Hopefully I will receive a replacement packet at least but it would be interesting to hear if they had many others with complaints from that batch. I too am cutting back and pinching out tips of runners
