Oh no, lily beetles are back!

Posted: 23/04/2014 at 19:40

York. My dad's lilies were infested when I went to see him at the weekend - I killed perhaps 20 adult beetles on four plants. Mine, 10 miles away, still have none. So it can be very local. I grow my lilies in pots, and this year I repotted them all. In the compost I found perhaps 15 grubs, but only in some pots. Apparently this shouldn't happen, as only adults over-winter. So either the RHS website is wrong, or I killed something else.

Verbena bonariensis. Can it be moved?

They should also have plenty of seeds on at the moment, which will germinate very easily. I find it's easier almost to treat them as annuals, and germinate fresh stock each year.

I've had a petrol mower for 15 years and never had it serviced. Works fine. Cheers!

Raspberries; alive or dead?

Raspberry plants (unless they're autumn raspberries) produce new canes each year, then fruit on those canes the next year. The following year, canes that have fruited will remain as dead brown sticks, unless you cut them out. A good guide to looking after raspberries can be found here

box hedge health issue

Doesn't look too bad to me, and not like the box blight I've seen. Maybe a bit of frost damage? Or else it could be irregular watering. Are you going to plant them in the ground or ar they staying in those containers? I think they would be happier in the ground as those containers don't look to be very deep, and they may be at risk of drying out.

I would wait until after the frosts, then give them a clip back, and they should recover OK
