Just found a few on my red currants for the first time. Never been on them before. I went a squishing and they have gone for now.

Slug Pubs - research opportunity

Posted: 02/06/2014 at 16:54

I can confirm that slugs and snails like Tesco everyday bitter, just emptied the traps and they were swimming with them. eughhh. However I still seem to be losing seedlings at an alarming rate. Maybe I should just grow holly!

Fruit advice needed

Posted: 01/06/2014 at 20:52

Hello Ashdale. I have a Tayberry which I had for a few years and brought a cutting with me to this house last year. The fruit is like a large blackberry sized raspberry. I treat mine just like a blackberry and grow it against a sunny fence in a fan shape.. The berries are ripening now I can't wait. They are pretty easy to look after, although birds do like to steal them. so be quick a grab them whilst they are ripe.

What's this little bod gonna grow up to be?

It's a Lackey moth caterpillar. I get them here, I like their smiling faces

Mine seem to have survived the first wave of sawfly, due to my constant checking. I don't know whether you ants would of taken them, but I like to think that they have . I have noticed I have lots of fat spiders on my bushes now and I think they have been gobbling the adults! Hoping this will help keep the numbers down..

Slug Pubs - research opportunity

I have constructed a roof for mine to help with the watering down effect. I use a empty small water bottle cut in half sunk in the ground with about 2cms above ground to stop beetles falling in. I then have 3 small sticks around the outside angled towards the middle but not reaching the centre and then I balance a small plant pot saucer upside down on the top. It looks like a slug pub with a stool balanced above.

Stops the rain and I can still catch the cheeky monkeys. (hope you can imagine it)

Slug Pubs - research opportunity

I was using Aldi's cheapest beer can't remember what they were called, but they were small bottles in a large pack. The slugs loved these and seemed to enjoy their slug pubs. I have bought today Tesco value bitter which was much cheaper and giving that a go.... I'll let you know.

Slugs.. sod the organic approach I just want them dead!

I bought the wool pellets last year. I was so excited to try something different. Unfortunately I found they attracted my neighbours cat, who loved to roll around in them and therefore crushing the seedlings! More annoying that the slimy slugs. I hope you have better luck with them than me.

I have the same problem with mine. I watered mine with garlic water in the hope that the sawfly are like slugs and don't like garlic flavoured leaves, not sure if it's working yet, too early to tell. I am also checking the bushes every day and squishing the blighters. It's constant vigilance at the moment. If you have already lost most of the leaves I'd try the nematodes. Good luck.

Fence versus privet hedge

Posted: 27/05/2014 at 10:35

When we moved in we had a massive overgrown and unloved privet hedge as well Topcat. We gave it a really, really hard prune, it did look very brown and sticky for that winter, but it soon started growing in the spring. This year it looks even better. I think you wouldn't have to wait long for it to fill out, they are fast growing. I am sure as Dove says if you explain to your neighbour why you want to trim the top they wouldn't mind. Give it a go!
